Lip ties and tounge ties

Hi all! My little girl is a month old tomorrow and we’ve noticed a lot of clicking when she’s feeding (she’s bottle fed breast milk as she could never latch in hospital) upon her checks before we left the hospital (the day after she was born) the midwife said all was well, including after looking at in her mouth. We’re a bit unsure what to do as I’m pretty sure baby girl has a lip tie, I looked briefly today after researching and I must say it definitely seems to be a lip tie anyway! I’m just basically looking for a bit of reassurance and how I go about this? Also what is treatment for this? I can only imagine it to be super painful for them?! Any advice is much appreciated! I’m absolutely terrified and can’t stand the thought of inflicting pain onto her! Thankyou!

Daughter had her tongue tie yesterday, she cried for all of two mins and was then fine after getting on the boob

My older daughter would make clicking noises when she fed - 2 midwives, 2 health visitors, a GP and 2 paediatric doctors all told me she didn't have a tongue tie but I finally got seen by the infant feeding team (who are actually trained to assess for tongue ties) and turns out she did have a tie! I'd contact your health visitor and ask for a referral to the infant feeding team ASAP, there can be long waits for them to actually be cut. My daughter had hers cut at 10w old - it was distressing but so worth it, as it saved our breastfeeding journey and she continued to feed until 2y

Yes agree with what the other ladies have said, I asked infant feeding team for a referral and had both of my twins assessed by a paediatric specialist yesterday. Make sure they do a full mouth assesment with a gloved finger, not just a visual look!

I got a number from the HV for the infant feeding team, who saw us and said they thought he had a tongue tie and referred us to the hospital. We had to wait about 3/4 weeks for the appointment. The appointment at the hospital was much more thorough then I thought it would be. I thought they would just look at it and say yes or no. But they rate it on a number of things and then the score it got determined what they recommended. They also asked for us to turn up with a hungry baby and observed them being fed. With my first, I expressed and bottle fed breast milk (he also didn’t latch, likely due to the tongue tie) and because he was feeding well from the bottle, they didn’t cut his. He is now 3 and a half and is fine.

@Louise this is good to hear, she feeds fine from a bottle other then the occasional clicking sound.. so if I could refrain from having it cut I would definitely! I’m pretty sure it’s a lip tie she’s got, but I’ll contact them and go from there. Thankyou xx

@Liv because our first didn’t have to have it done and is now absolutely fine, we didn’t really want our second to have it done - unless he really needed to of course. But they did the ratings on him and he had a high enough rating that they said he didn’t need one either 😊

I was told that our little girl didn't have a tongue tie, however when the infant feeding team came to help me with BF as we were really struggling she told me she was showing all the classic symptoms so we got her seen by a specialist and she did have one so we had it snipped, apparently this young it's not the snipping that bothers them it's the fingers in the mouth, my little girl cried for less than a minute. She still clicks when being fed but the feeding team think that might be due to being unable to maintain a seal due to tension so she's at the osteopath for this next week (who worked wonders with my 1st)
