My baby boy is 12 days old and he cannot stay awake for feeds. He’s a very very sleepy baby and just won’t finish the bottle because he cannot stay awake for them.
Anyone gone thru something similar? We have his two week appointment on Wednesday so any advice?

Naked is a good place to start, also gentle touches to the chin / cheeks immediately gets the latch going again most the time
My little boy was like this, have you tried changing the teat size? We found he was getting bored having to fight to get the milk out
@Emma he chugs (whenever he does eat) already at size 1 (doctor browns size 1), so I’m hesitant to move up.
Has he got any other issues despite falling asleep on the bottle and is it for every feed? It could possibly be his way of saying he is full, how many oz/mls are you giving him per bottle
Babies regardless if breastfed or bottle fed can cluster feed
Change nappy before feed?
@Emma he had issues drinking for like the first 2/3 days and only could drink .25oz at a time but he started improving and flip flops between 1.5-3oz a feed when we’re encouraging him. If we don’t, he’ll hardly drink 1oz
This is so different from my daughter, she was drinking 2oz out of the womb, very eager feeder and never had an issues, so I’m in uncharted water
Feel free to give me a message as this sounds exactly like my son at that age, it’s so stressful when they don’t take as much as they should be, I started keeping a diary of when I fed him and how much he was taking each feed and eventually had him in hospital as he stopped feeding completely, turned out he has cmpa!
Might sound mean but I would blow in her face a little bit and it would wake her up to keep sucking
My daughter was in the nicu for a while and the nurses taught us to unswaddle her, change positions, talk to her etc
I felt so bad doing it haha but she was always much happier after she ate
Is he gaining weight ok? I obsessed over this with my first baby but with my second I just let her lead. As long as he’s gaining weight I’d say just let him signal when he’s full and sleepy. He’ll let you know when he’s hungry again and intervals between feeds will gradually start getting longer and he’ll start taking more each time. Also like us he might want more at one feed and less at another.
@Lauren well at his 3 day appointment, he went from his birth weight of 7lb13oz to 7lb1oz which is like 9% down, we have his 2 week appointment tomorrow so we’ll truly see then, but his appetite has improved since those first couple days.
How did he do? It’s normal for them to lose weight in the first few days. I think it’s something like up to 10-12% is normal, something around there
@Lauren he was only 7lb 3oz at his 2 week appointment yesterday. We switched to a gentler formula for now. We have a follow up appointment tomorrow (Friday) and she hoping for a gain for an ounce a day. If he hits that, we’ll be back next week to make sure he hits birth weight, if he doesn’t hit that we’ll use a fortification and then check back next week.
She mentioned a cows milk allergy but I don’t think she wants to pin it on that yet.
@Lauren he’s up 3oz now! 7lb7.5oz so we’re gonna keep doing what we’re doing. We originally were feeding enfamil and switched to the gentlease enfamil between this appointment and the last. Seems that was the issue!
