I’m starting today with my daughter (going really well!!) But I have a question.. I take her to the toilet every 30 minutes and she’s been multiple times.. how do I encourage her to tell me when she needs a wee? She doesn’t seem to be saying anything inbetween and I’ve asked her if she needs to go but she says no every time 🤷♀️ will this just come in time?

Learn more about our guidelines.I’d start stretching the length of time between wees because she won’t learn the urge feeling as her bladder won’t be full if she’s going very frequently. I found it took a few days with my son. Also found he can hold it for a lot longer than I was expecting. Even now I do prompt him sometimes if it’s been a while since he’s been and he’s very engrossed in something. He started spontaneously saying he needs a wee. It’s just something that starts to click naturally I think.
@Lesley ahh thank you for this! It’s our first day, hence why I was reluctant to stretch the time! But she did have a half accident where she peed just as she got to the potty (she took herself there). I wonder if she doesn’t actually NEED the toilet, she just goes because I’ve put her on it 🤣 I think you’re right in trying to make her feel that urge. Thank you! Xx
Yeah agreed with the above. I think it actually also helps for them to have an accident. Get familiar with the wet feeling so that they want to pee on the potty to avoid it. I did 30 mins for the first day but found it was way too often. I did every hour on day 2 and actually honoured when my son said ‘no’. Eventually he said yes because he had the urge.
@Melanie I’ve asked her a few times and she’s said no so I’m just waiting her out 😅
@Poppy sorry I meant, I moved to asking every 1 hour instead of taking him every hour x
@Melanie I just took her to the toilet before her bath and she went straight away.. but hadn’t told me that she needed it 🤦♀️ I’m hoping that this evening or tomorrow, I can just remind her every hour but she will tell me if she needs to go/have an accident in between so she can learn “the urge” x
That’s how I started with my son. You’re doing great. You might find you get more accidents but while it feels like going backwards, that’s when they learn most. So if that happens try not to be disheartened. At the moment she has no idea about controlling toileting. You kind of have to go through a bit of mess before it starts to click with them.
@Lesley thank you so much. I really appreciate it x
The other thing I found made a difference was keeping my son naked from the waist down for the first few days as clothes make them feel like they have the nappy still. My son had more accidents with clothes on. You’ll also notice their cues when they need to go more easily too. The first few days can be tough but then they can surprise you how quickly they get it all of a sudden.
