Hii, could anyone explain what the health visitor does on their home visit?
Also if anyone had a home birth, what the midwife home risk assessment involves?
I’ve got 3 home visits coming up in the next two weeks (health visitor, midwives and doula) and it’s making me nervous for some reason. I think having 3 just feels like a lot and a bit invasive if that makes sense!

Health visitor literally just gave me red book, asked me how I plan on feeding, gave me leaflets, and asked about me and my husbands health and general information about us. Was a bit of a waste of time personally. I was worried she was coming to look around judge etc. but she literally just sat and gave leaflets and spoke about breastfeeding and safe sleep and then mental health

I know what you mean! Even after you give birth they are constantly coming around too & feels abit too much - personally. Usually they just give out advice / leaflets etc

I loveeeee seeing our HV! We’re part of the MESCH program, so I see ours every 2 months now that she’s 1, but it was more regular before 12m. As it’s my first and only baby, I’ve felt like I needed more support, she stays about an hour each time and she’s interested in my wellbeing as well as baby’s. I’ve been really lucky (as I’ve seen some horror stories on here) that my HV feels like a friend.

I didn’t have a home birth but I had health visits with both babies.
They didn’t check the house but lots of questions on how I was feeling, how baby was feeding, weighing baby, updating the red book, checking my wound was okay. They ask about DV and if you feel safe and healthy, if you have support, it’s a bit of an assessment on mum’s health as much as baby’s.

Health visitor just introduces themselves to you and answers questions. Same from midwife I imagine.

I had the health visitor on day 3 post birth I think it was and she just wanted to see how we were getting on, check if I had signs of PPD, talk about how feeding was going and then see where baby was sleeping for safe sleep, she was with us for about 45 minutes and then that was it. All our other visits with her were us going to her which I much preferred. Hoping it’s still the same this time around

When my midwife came for the home birth risk assessment, she went through a list of things with us. She explained different scenarios related to home birth and how they would be managed, what would happen on the day, and asked what pain relief techniques I’m planning to use. She also talked about situations where we might need to be transferred to the hospital, what we need to prepare for a home birth, and how to rent a pool for a water birth. After that, she examined me, as she usually does during my appointments.
As I’m also in Sheffield, I assume they will do something very similar during your home visit. It was all really relaxed, but I did find the amount of information a bit overwhelming. I’m glad I had spoken with my doula about the meeting beforehand, as I already knew what I would agree to and what I wouldn’t.
