First pregnancy and emetophobia??

Just found out this week that I’m pregnant with my husband and I’s first baby!! We are so excited, but I’m having some serious anxiety kicking in too. According to the date of my last period, I’m about 4w3d, and I’m starting to get really nervous about morning sickness. I have had pretty severe emetophobia (phobia of vomiting) for most of my life and go into full blown panic attacks whenever I think it’s even a POSSIBILITY that I will vomit. I want to enjoy every minute of being pregnant but I’m already dreading the next few months. Any advice from other emetophobic mommas out there that have been through it? 💕

I haven’t got emetophobia, but look into CBT for it. CBT4panic.org is a great free website to help manage panic. It wouldn’t be specific to emetophonia, but it will help to manage the panic symptoms at least. Tbh, the sheer amount of exposure you’ll experience will probably cure it 😂

Your not alone I have this too! I’ve just had a 6 week counseling session to try and control it. (I’m 26 weeks with my second child) very luckily I haven’t been sick in either pregnancy but I have felt soooo nauseous for the first 15 weeks or so. I still get panicky a lot when I start to feel sick but I would definitely look into counseling (I was fast tracked when they found out I was pregnant and I did it on the back of a 6 week anxiety course) I’ve been so much better since I had the counseling. I totally understand your worries. I was sick last time in labour and I’m starting to get panicky about that now but they gave me some amazing advice and things to do to calm me down And I hope it helps if the times comes where I need it. It was one to one counselling. I had 6 weeks of cbt before I got referred for private counseling after discussions with various mental health professionals. 😊 I mean I guess they called it counseling but was referred on the back of the cbt so could be related to that? I’m not a professional so apologies if I have worded this wrong?

Not to be rude but are you sure it was counselling and not CBT? Counselling isn’t usually recommend for phobias or anxiety.

Invest in PREGGIE POPS! They helped me during my morning sickness and they’re delicious 😋 And congratulations!!!

I already stocked up from Amazon 😂 they’re being delivered tomorrow so I’ll be prepared!

Firstly, congratulations! I am also in exactly the same position. I had 13 weeks CBT for emetophobia as I was so upset that I couldn’t even put myself in the position of getting pregnant for fear of being sick. It was completely controlling my life. But I got there and I’m now six weeks! I get really nauseous at all times of the day but haven’t been sick yet. I’ve been doing lots of breathing techniques and thinking about how it’s a positive thing to feel sick because it means my baby is healthy. I started feeling sick in my fourth week and today has been my first day of feeling more well at 6+4. I feel worse the more anxious I am and so I try to keep as calm as possible. Also try not to read too many threads on here about the horrors of morning sickness. The fact we have made it to this stage is massive progress! It’s really comforting that there are other people out there who feel the same. I’d love for us to all be able to support each other.

Congrats! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to enjoy every minute, there’s a lot of being pregnant that I didn’t enjoy but there’s also a lot of amazing things too - just go with it - hope the sickness thing is okay for you! X

I absolutely hate throwing up too but I’m almost 17 weeks pregnant and haven’t thrown up yet! Feeling lucky. Hope the same for you!

Check this out they have a programme specifically for Emetophobia I used to work with Rob Kelly myself his work is incredible https://www.thriveprogramme.org

Candied ginger !!

There are pills you can take for morning sickness if you get it. There is only one kind and is safe to take.

I was the same way. I was more scared of vomiting than giving birth.

Talk to your doctor? There is medication out there for morning sickness called diclectin. I was on it as I work in a restaurant in a management and the smells were very difficult to combat and I could not keeping running to the washroom and do.my job effectively. It kept everything down for me. Of you do get to go on it be careful when you come off of it. Ween yourself off by dropping the dose on halves a week at a time in order to prevent the return of morning sickness. I seriously swore by that stuff.

I didn’t know there was such a thing! I myself am Scared to vomit that I cry and try not To vomit

I don't know if this helps, but I never threw up once throughout my whole pregnancy. I was only nauseous a few times. My sister in law said she was the same way, so maybe you will be like me and won't have to worry about it at all.

Congratulations! 💕 Some women don't experience any morning sickness, and sometimes it never turns into vomiting! I personally had it my whole pregnancy and I used to hold it in until I physically couldn't because I hated it so much. Eventually it just became "normal" to me. I still enjoyed my entire pregnancy because I tried to shift my focus towards the beautiful parts of pregnancy. Don't stress too much about it though. For most women, if they experience it, it's a small portion of the pregnancy.

Hi. Sorry to jump on an old post but I was wondering how you’re doing and how you’ve handled any times uou were sick. I’m TTC at the moment but very scared about the reality of falling and then having to face my fear if morning sickness happens!
