Spina Bifida

Hi moms, I was reluctant to share but I definitely need the support ♥️ I have a happy and bubbly 6 month old baby girl. At her 4 month pediatrician appointment, I pointed out that she has what’s called a sacrum dimple. He said it could be an indication that she has spina bifida and now has an MRI scheduled where she will be put under anesthesia. Have any mommies out there gone through anything like this? I’m not sure what to expect 🙁 Thank you 🙏🏼

I dont have any experience with this but I just wanted to say that you and your little one are in my thoughts and prayers ❤❤❤

My best friends daughter has spina bifida, she is 7 and a little spit fire!

My son has a sacrum dimple and it turned out to be nothing. He was checked right away at birth. Doctor said they are pretty common

Omg she is the cutest thing! I wish my 8 month old girl had hair like your girl!

Omg gorgeous prayers sent ur way mama

I haven't had an experience but I am a nurse and look after adults with spina bifida ❤ there are some many amazing things to help people with spina bifida live long happy lives xx

Keep in mind It can be nothing! Everything will be alright🙏🏼❤️

My son has a sacrum dimple. I pointed this out when he was around 6 months and his doctor organised an ultra sound which ruled out Spina bifida. I’m wondering why she needs an MRI under anaesthetic as her first method of ruling it out??

They said that an ultrasound can only be performed until she’s 3 months, after that the spine develops and it makes it harder to see. That’s why I’m glad I’m asking because I think it’s a bit extreme for a 6 month old

I think so too... maybe my son was before 3 months then 🤔 I will find out for you tomorrow and let you know

Both my kids have very deep dimples and they are absolutely nothing. It was so strange after my second birth when the midwife made a sound whilst checking over baby. It was like i just knew and said to her does she have a dimple? She was so surprised that I guessed!

Aww how cute!! I would get a second opinion before getting an MRI

All I can say is that if it’s spina bifida, it’ll be a very mild form of it. Some people have spina bifida where they still walk and have no cognitive defecits, but may have a little weakness in legs and /or continence issues (that there are surgical options for)

Ps your daughter is adorable!

My daughter has one and doctors sent her to have a scan luckily she didn’t have anything wrong with her.She inherited from her daddy.

Oh my daughter loves to run nothing stops her I’ve heard those are common I wouldn’t worry about it

My daughter has one. It was noticed at her first all over check whilst in hospital. They straight away said that it could be spina bifida and got the paediatrician to come down. It was all very shocking and I was on my own as it was at the start of the pandemic and partners weren’t allowed in. Since then when ever I have seen a midwife or dr I have asked for it to be checked. They paediatrician said that as long as they can see the ‘seal’ (back of the dip) then they are happy and that it’s not an issue. But keep an eye on it. I have to clean hers after poops. Try not to panic xx

I am glad I posted this, I didn’t realize how great the support would feel. Thank you Mommies for the advice, kind words and support. I am wondering why they don’t give her a sleeping medication versus putting her under anesthesia. Do you guys know if there is a risk with sleeping meds in a situation like this where she needs an MRI?

Did you not have the scan for it in pregnancy?

I did, it was negative. They didn’t say anything at the hospital, and they didn’t see it at her first pediatrician appointment :(

@Vanessa how did the mri go in the end?
