Eating the same during pregnancy?

Hi fam! I’m 23 weeks pregnant and I noticed that I really don’t eat more that I would regularly (when I’m not pregnant). I’m gaining weight **very slowly**. Doctor didn’t seem concerned last checkup(3 weeks ago), but I can’t tell if My belly has gotten bigger since then. Baby is moving so that’s a good sign. Any thoughts? Is it ok to not be eating more? Or should I try to get more calories in?

They say we should be doubling our calorie intake but I'm also petite like you so I simply eat until I'm full😄 as long as you & baby are healthy 👍👍👍

@Debbie who says we should double our calories ?! 😂🤷‍♀️ you actually don’t need any more until the final 3 months and even then it’s only an extra 200 cals which is like two slices or toast or something ... eating for two is a myth 😁😁

Absolutely not true! Yes, you are meant to steadily increase your calories intake, but so much so so that in the 3rd trimester you eat 200 calories more than you normally would (i.e. before pregnancy). Doubling calorie intake is the worst thing you can do for yourself and "eating for two" is an absolute myth.

Some days I eat more, but most days I eat the same too. I believe that our bodies know what we need. As long as you aren’t restricting your intake for any reason, you should be just fine! No need to “eat for two”, just watch for signs that you may need more nutrients. You look great!

You should try to eat a little more than usual. But I'm the same way and don't feel hungrier than my usual. I just try to make sure I'm having snacks when my older kids ask for them. You need about 350 extra calories a day during pregnancy which isn't a lot. It's about 2 snacks or half of a sandwich.

Both babes I didnt actually start gaining until week 26 and later in my 3rd trimester is when I had the urge to eat more. I would just do what your doing now and not eat just to eat as long as you're healthy :)

You absolutely do not need to eat more than usual. For 1-2nd trimester your body barely requires any extra calories and also it is balanced by your body trying to save energy and feeling more tired, if you do workout regularly you might feel like consuming around 150cal more per day. In the 3rd trimester you would require around 300 extra cal. Also regarding the weight gain it depends on our starting BMI. Unless you are in underweight category and within the healthy range of 18.5-24.9 you would only expect to gain between 11 and 16kg throughout the whole pregnancy

You look beautiful and so is your bump! I agree with the ladies above me. You don’t need to increase your calorie intake by much. Focus more on making healthy choices and keeping hydrated. Of course indulge every so often, I believe it’s good for the soul haha. I was very tiny before getting pregnant and was so worried I wouldn’t be able to put on weight. I’m 30 weeks now and have gained 20 lbs so far. My mother gained 80lbs when she was pregnant with me and I was born 7lbs and healthy. My aunty gained 15lbs with her first and also gave birth to a healthy 7lb baby. Many other mothers told me their stories about their 20, 30, 40 up to 90lb weight gains. Every woman is different. Main thing is making sure you are getting enough vitamins, minerals and nutrients so your baby doesn’t take it from your bones and teeth.

You don't really need to eat much more. I think it's something like 200 calories more in the 3rd trimester. Just eat when you're hungry. Keep a well balanced diet and you're doing well mumma!

I personally had to up my intake on calories when I was pregnant. I was very small and ate the same and baby didn’t gain proper weight. Doctor prescribed Ice cream before bed at night to relax and get more calories 😂

I really struggled to eat as I usually do as had hyperemesis and then when baby got bigger she pressed on my digestive system so I could only eat little and often really. I didn’t gain much weight until later on and I’ve probably gained a stone. Don’t worry too much. My baby is a healthy weight.

I ate half as much as I normally do due to lack of appetite and as a result lost weight. But there was no concerns.

You don't need extra calories until your 3rd trimester. My doc says eating for two is a myth, her words "eat for one, sleep for two"

I wouldn’t worry about it unless your doctor is concerned with weight gain. I gained a total of 5lbs while pregnant with my daughter and with my current pregnancy not really gained anything (lost 3lb between my last 2 visits). I’ll be 19 weeks tomorrow. My metabolism really kicks in when I’m pregnant and I definitely eat the same amount (if not a little more) and it doesn’t seem to affect my weight gain.

I ate the same amount of calories and weight gain was pretty slow for me I’m currently 27 weeks and at the 17lb weight gain mark. As long as your doctor is ok with where you’re at and baby is healthy I think you’re perfectly fine.

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and I've gained 18 pounds - you're supposed to eat only 200 calories extra in the 3rd trimester 😋 this is based on the NHS UK guidance

Eat the same, you’re doing the right thing. It might be you get slightly more hungrier in which you eat when you are. Stay healthy and you’re fine

I didn’t eat anymore really! Just make sure you are eating well and the right things x

Eat when you're hungry🤷‍♀️ baby will take what he/she needs regardless

I go through days where I’m HUNGRY and then days when I just eat normally.

I didn't gain a single oz when I was pregnant - not everyone does gain weight, and you don't need to up your calories much, just make sure you're eating when you're hungry and keeping hydrated x

I just have to ask, are you having a boy?

Do not worry! You’re gaining weight and your dr is not worried! You had a healthy appetite before apparently (: and also if you’re eating enough calories and you’re eating the right foods you do t need as much.

I was very sick during my pregnancy and threw up a lot and hardly ate. I lost about 20 pounds the first like 3 months then as my nausea went away and I could keep food down I slowly gained weight as well. Maybe about a pound or two a month. I really didn’t eat that much either and my stomach was rather small, but I just gave birth last month and my baby boy is perfectly healthy! Make sure you are taking your prenatals and eat when you can and drink plenty of water

Like the comment above said, if your doctor isn’t worried then it’s okay!

Thank you for sharing this! I am in a very similar position. I’m currently 28 weeks and had very limited weight gain but bump is definitely growing and bub is moving lots. My midwife didn’t seem concerned either but it doesn’t stop me worrying 😔 xx

On the first trimester i got full fast. but after the second thats when my appetite opened up.

I ate a lot less during pregnancy. Was not bothered about food at all!

It’s only in the 3rd trimester that you need additional calories and even then it’s only an additional 300 cals

I'm 22 weeks and I actually eat alot less then I did pre pregnancy. Baby is growing well and doctor is happy, I think its just different for everyone.

NHS advises a calorie increase in 3rd trimester and its only 200kcals.
