Sleeping on Belly

My son is now 4 months old and has learned to roll over onto his belly at night. I always make sure that his head is turned and not face down into the mattress. After a recent visit with the doctor however I was told that he absolutely should not be sleeping on his belly yet. I feel like the doctor scares me into doing what she wants. I did a little research and despite what the doctor said the articles I’ve found say that if they roll over themselves leave them. I just wanted some advice from other moms on what they thought. Should I listen to the doctor or do what I think is best for my baby?

It is up to you if you want to turn him on his back every 5 minutes. Personally, I decided to sleep instead 😅

I would leave him be, there is no way you can keep rolling him back over all night and sids risk is way lower once baby is 4 months. In my opinion you should always do what feels right to you and don’t let a doctor scare you into doing some you don’t believe is right. My daughter’s first pediatrician told me that I had to night wean and sleep train at 4 months, and I immediately switched pediatricians. Moral of the story, don’t blindly follow what someone says just bc they’re a doctor.

My baby's pediatrician said that once the baby is rolling over on his or her own that you don't need to reposition...Does your baby have specific health issues (e.g. a history of breathing issues) that might make your pediatrician extra nervous?

Cuteeee🥰

My son was a belly sleeper straight from birth. No matter how many times I put him on his back he wouldn't sleep. So I let him, he slept with me anyway so I could keep an eye. But once baby can roll over its ok

Our daughter did the same exact thing at that age. She is still a stomach sleeper to this day.

I got an angel care sensor pad for this. my daughter had silent reflux and wouldn't sleep on her back, peadiatrition said let her sleep on her front x

If he is able to roll back n forth himself then i would leave him. If he wasnt able to roll then i would absolutely turn him x

I figured this was how it should be. My 1 month old has been a side sleeper this whole time. I make sure he doesn't get to his belly since he is so young, but if I adjust to have him on his back he rolls right back to his side.

Let him sleep and get a new doctor lol

My daughter hated sleeping on her back and She didn’t like being swaddled. My mom told me to try putting her on her belly and she slept so well. She could turn her head and lift her head just fine during tummy time so I just let her.

i’m sorry i’ve got no advice! but what a little cutie pie 🥰

Thank you

Thank you everyone for the advice! I’m definitely going to let him sleep however he feels comfortable. The pediatrician was my pediatrician as a child that’s why I chose her. But I think I will just take her comments as advice or suggestions from now on and just trust my gut when it comes to his sleeping habits.

What? I was told by my son’s pediatrician that it was fine for him to sleep that way as long as he can roll over from back to stomach and stomach to back on his own. He was doing this at 4 months as well. It’s the only way he would sleep. My son is a wild sleeper. He rolls around a lot.

Yes it’s my understanding you shouldn’t lay them down face down, but if they put themselves in that position it’s ok. Otherwise you’d have to hover all night to make sure they don’t flip! Ours has been a stomach sleeper since the day she figured out how to get in the position, around 3 or 4 months

My baby girl sleeps like this too. She’s one now and she’s been fine. Apparently my husband also slept this way (with his booty in the air). Although we attempted to turn her over she always manages to end up in the same position.

I know you said he’s 4 months but how far into four months is he? My daughter won’t be 4 months until the 14th and she’s already rolled over front to back to back to front once.. it hasn’t done it since and she was young like maybe 1 month to two? So, she sleeps on her sir but hasn’t managed to rolling over.. so just curious

Same!!

My pediatrician said as long as they have control over there head like moving it left and right and holding it up theyre good to sleep however theyre comfortable

I agree with majority of these Mama's , we can't be there every minute with them that's just nonsense. I was also reading an article and it said babies know when they're body is in danger so they'll adjust themselves. My baby girl just started rolling over more and more 😅they grow too fast

Your instincts are correct. As long as your baby knows how to roll from back to front and front to back and they are not swaddled on their arms are not constraint anyway there is absolutely no problem with letting them sleep on their tummy if that’s how they feel most comfortable

Pedis need to cover their ass. As long as he can roll independently he’s okay

My son is 1 month and I put him on in his stomach because he sleeps so much better. I'm a worry wart, so I only let him sleep that way when I'm able to supervise to make sure he's breathing.

Working at a daycare, and a lot in the infant room I learned once they know how to roll, and they’ve rolled themselves to that position they are ok. We also check on them very frequently. NOTHING else is in the crib though. No extra blanket or anything at all. Just the fitted sheet and the baby in a sleep sac.

My boys were all doing this at 4 months too. I left them once they started rolling around. 😊

There's very little you can really do if he can roll. My son is 21 months and sleeps like. And if I were to put him on his back he'd scream then roll back. If they can get in and out of this position I cannot fathom why it would be a problem

I’m pregnant with my third and was always told once they start rolling onto their belly, it’s fine. How in the world do you keep a baby from rolling onto their belly anyway? You’d be up all night constantly rolling them back over. Leave him be.

If they are rolling themself, have nothing dangerous in their bed, and can lift their head I have known it to be 100% ok. Unless you kyerallt watch them 24/7 and get no sleep yourself, how else are you supposed to prevent it? Rolling at 4 months is a strong baby.

Your baby is fine. Dont stess yourself. My baby started doing this around the same time and now she refuses to sleep unless she’s on her tummy. There’s only so much you can do to keep them on their back and ultimately they will do what they want

If they roll over on their own then i leave them. I'm on my 3rd baby who's just learning to roll over now. Just out of interest could the doctor tell you why it's bad for babies to sleep on their tummy?

Oh hun, everyone is ok! My daughter started sleeping on her tummy around the sametime. 🤗
