Failed IVF

We have just found out that our first round of IVF has failed due to fertilisation issues. We had 17 egg, 10 mature and only 1 fertilised but didn’t develop. This was a huge shock to us and the clinic as all of our tests came back good and they said the egg and sperm quality were good but they just didn’t interact. Our clinic has suggested that we try ICSI for our next cycle to help get over the fertilisation hurdle. Has anyone else been in this situation before and was ICSI more successful? I feel absolutely devastated. I had mentally prepared myself that the transfer might not work but did not prepare to be unable to make any embryos 🥺

My clinic does ICSI automatically. But my last clinic we had to pay extra and we were recommended to do it due sperm quality issues

Our clinic does icsi if they feel they need to intervene, we just had to consent to it prior to.

Hiya we went through private. They suggested icsi to give us better chance of fertilisation as we wanted to reduce leaving things to chance. I would recommend it but down to individual choice too x

We did icsi as per the clinics advice, they choose the best sperm so I think that helps chances. We also paid for embryoscope-worth looking into. I think it helped us.

I’ve never heard of IVF that didn’t use ICSI. At my clinic everyone does that. Bizarre how different places are. I’d be so mad if I was you.

You should check if they used this liquid

My clinic will only do ICSI. However my clinic is super crazy about maintaining their high success rates so they basically have everyone do PGT, ICSI and will dump any embryos with a C grade. Based on those numbers you got, you probably would have gotten great results with ICSI so I definitely recommend doing it next round. We had 20 eggs retrieved and after everything was said and done, landed with 6 high graded PGT normal embryos. Good luck!

Exact same thing happened to me with 21 eggs. I was so mad at them. Icsi will definitely give you more embryos in next cycles.

@Elise may i know which clinic is that please

We tried zymot and AOA when we had quality and fertilisation issues. Worth looking into :) x

We had that happen with ICSI twice. Unfortunately for us it was a matter of incompatibility but ICSI should resolve the first hurdle for you and if that doesn’t work it will give the clinic a much better understanding of why. Best of luck

@Ana did you try IVF before ICSI? I’m so sorry that happened with you. I think I’m scared that as they were incompatible to fertilise on their own that if we do ICSI they will still not be compatible and we will end up with the same result

@Ashley oh really? I didn’t realise some clinic only done ICSI. My husbands sperm analysis came back good and we also did a sperm fragmentation test which also came back good. From this the clinic said they didn’t see a need for ICSI which is why we were in such shock at the results. We have been labelled as undiagnosed infertility but I guess this give us some answers as why it hasn’t worked in the past x

@Jorie yeah that is strange. I think maybe it might be different in the UK because most clinic offers IVF and only use ICSI if sperm results suggest it is needed x

I didn’t have the same situation but we did ivf the first time and got 6 blast from 9 fertilised eggs. However we have transferred 3 of those embryos and they all resulted in failure. The rest were genetically tested and only one euploid remains. So I’m pretty sure the quality of our embryos from that cycle wasn’t great We did ICSI for my other 2 egg retrievals and thought our fertilisation rate was lower than average (3 out of 8 and 4 out of 15) we got pretty good graded euploid embryos out of those transfers (2 out of 3 and 4 out of 4). Transferred 2 of those euploid embryos (separate transfers) one ended in miscarriage and currently 11 weeks pregnant after the other transfer. So even though our fertilisation drop off after ICSI was poor we ended up with better results. The whole IVF process is a rollercoaster of a ride. I’m so sorry you’ve got this knock it is devastating. But I think trying ICSI is a good next step, hang in there xxx

We never did ivf, just 2 cycles of ICSI before we went to donor sperm, I know what you mean but if that is the case I just felt like it was better to know at least, as devastating as it is at least that way you know and can process it and decide next steps. Sending you strength

@A.R. Studies show implanting 3 at once doesn’t increase your odds by much. Since them implanting is dependent on the quality of your lining. If you get more 1 at a time increases your chances tremendously so they don’t all fail at once.

Ah def different in the US. I keep forgetting there are so many UK people in here.

With ICSI 25% of the eggs, if you are under 35 and healthy, should become healthy embryos. Drops as you age.

@BonnyI’m in the states so this clinic isn’t available for anyone in UK. It’s CCRM

@Elise CCRM is the DEVIL. I’ve been going to the them. My advise is double check everything!! Among many other things: They refunded my second canceled cycle as their nurse sent the wrong concentration of medication for me. My instructions were give 20 units. I was not given the concentration of what the medication was supposed to be in micrograms. I took 1000 mcg of lupron morning and night instead of 40mcg. The clinic told me the doctor DOES NOT double check the medications the nurse sends in. I discovered the error myself when talking to the pharmacy to get a refill. Unfortunately this discovery came 38 days into my calendar.

@Jorie yea I ultimately lost my pregnancy at 17 weeks due to placental abruption from an SCH that never resolved. I am fully convinced it’s because they didn’t manage my hormones well and fucked up my transfer (I was on a modified natural protocol). They then started pumping me full of PIO shots when my progesterone dipped only slightly to 19 which was totally unnecessary. I think they had me trigger too late when my lining was already above 9mm. My SCH popped up at 7w5d and my OB and MFM basically told me afterwards that all my complications I experienced were because of IVF (I had no prior history and only did IVF to get the genetically tested embryos) and that I shouldn’t have done it. Thankfully I got naturally pregnant the first cycle trying after that loss and didn’t have to go back But we still have 5 embryos with them and I want to make sure I have a girl as my 3rd so I might have to use them again :/

The retrieval itself was fine for me. It was more that I think they did my transfer procedure wrong and how they managed my hormones after.

@Elise Yeah I definitely wouldn’t let them be responsible for your care after that. CCRM will transfer embryos to a different facility. That’s what I’m doing if I get any this round. They made it hard for me to leave them and not get paid. They told me they will only cover my medications used for the failed cycle if I repeat the same calendar with them. I guess they don’t want to lose money on me without making money on me at the same time. I could write soo much on what they’ve done to me.

Mine will only do ICSI due to MIF. 1st collection I ended up with 3 embryos and 2nd 4 embryos. And I was 39 with both collection, egg quality decreases with age, so happy with what they got.

@Jorie thankfully my insurance covered almost all my expenses so I’m not really financially tied to them. They’re just so conveniently located to me otherwise I have to drive an hour up to San Francisco to go to the next best clinic in the area. We’ll see - maybe we’ll just decide after these two that we’re in over our heads and won’t have another… Good luck!

@Jorie all of my transfers were single transfers. I can see how my post could be read differently…. It’s been a long long road for me

We had exact same thing happen, normal ivf failed due to no fertilisation. Our second round we then did ICSI (at another clinic) and got 3 embryos. Our first FET worked and my daughter is now 8 months! Feel free to DM me x

@A.R. Ohhh wow 3 different ones that’s not good. I’d try a different clinic if the one that implanted three separately has not been successful. It’s hard to move on but sometimes a different set of eyes can change everything. From other experiences I have read.
