90% of your average weekly earnings (before tax) for the first 6 weeks £184.03 or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for the next 33 weeks SMP is paid in the same way as your wages (for example monthly or weekly). Tax, National Insurance and pension contributions will be deducted. (I personally opted out of my pension contribution for the period of my SMP) £689.92 is what I got a month 🙃

One thing to consider is that you may not actually end up paying any taxes due to it being the start of the new tax year! :)

You can use the calculator online which will give you the amount pre tax,NI and pension that will be used by your employer: https://www.gov.uk/maternity-paternity-calculator I used it when I found out about my pregnancy so that we could work out how much we need to save before my mat leave to top up the pay to cover our bills

@Kelly can we opt out pension during the SMP and opt in after joining back in company? Im only entitled to SMP and due to start my mat leave next month.. please advise xx

@Sowmya I would ask your employer/pension provider to be sure. My employer uses Nest. I was able to go out and in as I pleased.

@Kelly thank u x sure I will ask them , my employer uses the same Nest. But just want to know if there’s such option to do, it would be really beneficial to me x

I’m taking home just over £700 but I’ve no option to opt out then opt in again re my pension, I really wish I did.

I’ve got £777 this month not including child benefit

@Sophie is this with taxes & pension? :) just trying to work out how much I might get, however my work pay for my pension whilst I’m on mat leave x

@Brigitte yes hun x
