NEED TO VENT…

Went for my 20 week scan and turns out my baby has Transposition of the Great Arteries. Anyone else experiencing or have experienced this? I have to now switch doctors and have my baby at a big hospital. He will be immediately taken to the NICU. I am completely torn.

That is so scary, but it looks like with immediate surgery the prognosis is almost 100%!

@Debs yes. i just wish i knew how long he has to be in nicu. i don’t want to be separated from him at all.

thanks ladies

I feel for you. The idea of baby being taken immediately away to the NICU/surgery is so scary. It doesn't feel right that baby should be suddenly separated after being essentially part of you for so long. But he'll be in good hands while you're apart, and he'll be back with you when he's strong and ready. You'll be by his side for all of his important milestones, and you'll still be part of each other. I'm sure that doesn't sound very comforting, I don't think it would to me, but you and baby have got this. Can you communicate with the hospital you'll be delivering at to get an idea of what the experience could look like? How long surgery can take (high low estimate?), how long the NICU stay tends to be, what accomodations they have for parents to bond/spend time with baby? How long after surgery baby is typically able to be held? You could even see if they offer a virtual tour of the NICU area or anything. Sometimes for me just having an idea of what to expect makes things less scary.

So sorry this is happening to you. This happened to us with our first and this is heartbreaking. 💔 He’s a healthy 2yo now but the NICU is tough.

@Asher i have an appointment set up thursday to see what all i need to know

@Audrey that’s comforting knowing that babies turn out fine after the surgery
