Health visitor - speech

My little girl is coming up to her 2nd birthday and she’s still babbling a lot. She only says certain words like mum, dad, nan, dog, cat, juice, nice, hello - those are all the words she can say. I’m getting slightly concerned now, me and her dad both were late speaking but her dad had to have his tonsils and grommets out at 4 years old and that’s when he started speaking. Is it worth me popping her in to see a health visitor?

They don’t tend to worry about it until the age of 3. Has she had her two year check? Does she go to nursery as in our area they had to do a speech referral after proving they had worked on it for two terms. They usually do a hearing test first just incase there is underlying issues. Sounds like she is getting there though x

@Karen no she hasn’t yet. She goes to nursery but I’m currently moving her to a different nursery due to lack of communication from her current nursery but they don’t seem worried about it. I know you shouldn’t but I just compare her to other children her age and how much they speak. We’re always trying to encourage her to say new words, we use flash cards too

My little girls the same. But she does understand basic instructions which I think is more key at this stage? We also like singing and dancing. So pop a little miss Rachel on or nursery rhymes for toddlers and have some fun times.

I think if you’re concerned, there is no harm in speaking to a health visitor about it for their view, especially given the family history. I’m sure it’s fine & nothing to worry about, but I would seek support from my HV if only for some reassurance. I also found watching shows together like Ms Rachel worked well x

Yeah we’ve always got Ms Rachel on even if it’s on in the background and she does engage with that doing the actions etc. she understands instructions so I know her hearing fine. It’s just the family history, if there wasn’t family history then I probably wouldn’t be as concerned but given the history I just want to make sure and get some kind of plan in place and see what I can do more to help

Mine all of a sudden around 2 and a half starting talking more just came out of nowhere, wouldn’t worry x

My daughter could say a maximum of 10 words at 2 years old, she had to have speech therapy & is awaiting a hearing test (super long waiting list) she turnt 3 last month & she has only been speaking for the last 4 months. There is no harm in contacting your health visitor, it puts your mind at ease.

@Theresa I had to have a speech therapist too so I’m just thinking if she’ll benefit from this too. That’s fantastic with your little girl though! X
