Feeding

Hiya guys, my little girl is 6 days old now, she has dropped nearly 15% of her birth weight! I was exclusively breast feeding but have now had to stop it her on a feeding plan of 60ml a day (mix of breast and formula) she still is only having about 20ml of a bottle and that’s taking over and hour to have as she just falls asleep and refuses to eat, has anyone else had this issue and know any tips to get her eating it’s really worrying me, they nearly admitted her to hospital today and we have another weighing Friday she needs to gain weight!

Has she been assessed for tongue tie, high palette, etc? In terms of lethargic babies I know that lots of skin to skin contact helps with encouraging feeding, so strip both of you down and try that? Switching breasts during each feed as well, and it'll help with your milk production. Good luck x

@Anna yeha she’s clear of both! I do skin to skin every time after a nappy change but she seems to have a tiny amount then be done xx

Has she been tested for jaundice? We got readmitted asmy boy had lost 9.3% and he was sleepy through feeds and taking over an hour. They repeated his sbr levels and he went above treatment line so we got the call to go have some more phototherapy xx

We lost 13% so similar situation. Very lethargic and sleepy. Also a bit jaundiced. I fed on one breast till empty (or he fell asleep which was often ) and pumped/emptied the other breast, then gave it to him if I felt he needed the top up. Had a few false starts and took 3 weeks to regain birthweight but by the end he was gaining 45g a day this way. Lots of stripping him off /nappy changes to get him awake just enough that she’s latch onto the bottle. Took time, persevering and some tears (his and mine !)

@Shareace everytime they say she has perfect coloured skin, she reacts to stuff she has a startle reflex when she sleeps so they are happy she’s healthy it’s just the lack of interest in feeding and sleeps most the day, not many wake windows at all! Xx

@Jodie ah okay! See I’m hoping the bottle feeding will definitely help even if she’s not having the full amount straight away, we o my started today but I’m just anxious there’s something more wrong I keep checking her like every 10 minutes :( xxx

My baby lost 11% and kept falling asleep too. I would strip her down to her vest, blow her face and tickle her neck and toes to keep her awake during a feed and slowly but surely she put the weight on! Try not to panic (easier said than done); I got myself into a state about it at first, worrying constantly, but if she doesn’t have a tongue tie and she stays awake and if she is doing regular poos and wees she will get there xx

My baby was a sleepy baby, you'd have to strip her off, and together tickle her hands, feet, body, remove from your body so she got cold to keep her awake. We also learnt how to dream feed because sometimes even all of that didn't keep her awake
