I need help with feeding !!!

Hi all, I just became a mom 3 days ago. I got discharged yesterday and the doctor told me to do cluster feeding since he couldn’t get enough over night. Then I did last night but the problem is i had to constantly feed him for about 10 hours. I couldn’t sleep and my nipples are very very sore. I wanted to give up but it’s for my baby… I just don’t know if it’s okay to give him formula till my nipples are better. It’s Sunday and I have nobody to ask.

It’s your decision on if you want to give the formula or not , have you tried nipple butter for your sore nipples

Nipple cream nipple shield also could help give them time to heal whilst still bf express and give also

The cluster feeding is normal and they do it overnight because that's when your prolactin is highest. It will not last forever. Try to make sure baby is latched optimally as this can really help with reducing the pain. Look up some videos of a good latch. If things are not improving then please seek help. Can you give formula: it would impact your supply as you take away the suckling and removal of milk, which is what tells your body to make milk, you may also get mastitis if you do not express. It's your choice at the end of the day. Alternatively you could express and give baby milk. Remember whatever you choose if you feed by bottle it needs to be pace fed. My best advice is work on your latch, it's difficult in the middle of the night when you're tired but makes a huge difference.

I definitely agree with Emma. I would try and nipple shield that helped me so much because my baby was born a month premature and had trouble latching which would then lead to it being painful.!

Is your latch correct? Some soreness is expected, but if your nipple looks misshapen or it hurts while he is nursing, his latch may need to be corrected.

Day 3 is the hardest day. I was about to give formula to my baby on day 3. I was so desperate. My doula told me not to. Baby is cluster feeding and even if it's very hard it's necessary for your supply to grow as needed. I m happy I didn't give formula to my baby that day. Now i m 7 months ibto breastfeeding and it was totally worth it. Good luck mama.

And yes I agree with the others. Latch should be practiced because you and your baby are both learning how to do this. You have tons of videos online to help you find the right way to do it. Then practice again and again. It's gonna be soon easier. If you have doubt find a bf conselour

I used nipple shields, which helped minimize the pain, or at least prevent the bleeding 😅 and also the silverettes, those were a life saver!

Your nipples kind of need to toughen up at the beginning (which is so ouchy). I used cooling pads, nipple cream and also the silverlette cups which REALLY help heal your nipples fast. You put a couple of drops of breastmilk in and then pop them on and it helps them heal. The first few weeks of breastfeeding are really hard because you are both learning and babies need to feed at night (when you produce more prolactin between 1am and 5am) to get your supple going. You got this!!! I believe in you! You can do an observed feeding with the midwife so she can check the latch etc. My milk came in a little delayed cause I had a bad haemorrhage so baby was feeding a lot on the colostrum (I even had to hand expressing it in hospital a few times) and I was exhausted but its a learning curve, you’ll both get into the swing of it. Well done mama!

If you're really keen to continue BF, hold off the formula for now as it would effect your supply. Focus on the latch. I remember I try to grit my teeth through the pain. They were a state. Then I kept unlatching her until we got it right. Also, she didn't open wide, so I'd actually gently help pull her lower chin down. So also trust your instincts if the usual advice isn't working with your baby. Silver cap nipple shields, letting air get to to help it heal. And lanisoh nipple balm is the only one that's safe for baby to digest.

Try when baby’s finished feeding hand squeeze a drop of breast milk out and massage into your nipples and let it dry in then put nipple cream on . It will help your nipples heal
