Grunting

My 7 weeks old grunts all the time. I understand it’s normal for newborn to do that but he does it after feed, after burp, after poop, before sleeping and even during sleeping which sometimes wakes him up and we have to go through the whole process again. Is this normal?

My 6 week old has also started doing it.. intreged to see other people's experiences! I was wondering if she is thirsty as it has been more since the weather has improved 🤔 but guidelines is not to give water!

It could be infant dyschezia which goes away as they get older. Is your baby formula fed?

My son (also 7 weeks) literally is the noisiest thing ever. Mine even cries out while sleeping. It is likely him trying to coordinate his muscles to poop (that's what my pediatrician said).

i noticed my LO doing it and it was more like she was trying to poop or fart but it wouldn’t come out until it does she won’t do it anymore

@Mireya yes he is.

@Laura yea I was told the same but he does it after poop too so that’s why I’m just wondering if it’s even related to that

@Taraneh It can be the formula too. When my son was born he was on Similac 360 Total Care, and I noticed he was painfully gassy, grunted in his sleep, before and after feeds. Once I made the switch to Similac Pro-Total Comfort there was a complete change.

@Mireya he’s been on Similac pro advance ready to use since he was born. Are you using the same for your baby?

He is also breastfed, at first I thought it was the dairy from my breastmilk, but once I switched the formula I use to supplement him, it calmed him down a lot.

For the 360 total care, I had tried both, the ready to use and powder but he just wasn't reacting well to that formula at all. That was the one the hospital had given us. It also triggered silent reflux

@Mireya oh I’m thinking it’s probably silent reflux. He has all the symptoms. Which one triggered it for you? Similac pro advance or 360?

@Taraneh the similac 360 total care

My twin B grunts alllll the time usually when she’s pushin a poo out or when hungry a form of communication. They are mostly on breast milk and get supplemental formula every 12 hours. Sometimes both do it when they feed. They’re NICU babies so we learned that sometimes during feeds it could be acid reflux (just take the bottle out of mouth so they don’t choke) pacing them has helped the grunting too. Also, don’t give any water due to the way babies can’t break down the minerals.

@Meghan how do you pace them?

@Taraneh Are you bottle feeding, breastfeeding or both?

@Meghan bottle feed only

My 6 week old has had infant dyschezia since two weeks old 💀 I'm surprised I'm still alive for lack of sleep hahaha

@Kerry my twin B does this too. Literally all the time grunts groans stretches. So noisy since birth. She even started trying to use her voice. She does a happy squeal or a mad one if she doesn’t get boob fast enough. I didn’t know there was a name for it her appt is next week.

@Kerry We think my son has dyschezia. Is yours officially diagnosed, how do you know? We have next appt in a few days but curious before then. He is straining all the time, whether he produces a poop or not.

UPDATE my baby does have gas I had no idea. She doesn’t fuss or cry or anything. She had explosive toots when I did bicycle kicks and messaged her belly. My poor girl I feel so bad not knowing until now. Twice a day I’m helping her push. No more grunting

I can’t wait to get out of the newborn phase 😂

@Yenni how do you help her push?

@Sohenny i do bicycle kids
