So I just took my pup for her 12 month vaccination and they also did her kennel cough vaccine to then tell me I should keep my baby away for at least 6 weeks? How on earth am I going to maintain this? I’ve potentially sorted somewhere for my dog to go. But has anyone else experienced this, is this just to be safe or can my dog still be at home. Because she stressed baby can’t touch her face or anything or even her fur as they shed it out. Which is near enough impossible. But surely people get there dogs done every year and they have kids? Help!

I'm annoyed because I had no idea that the kennel cough vaccine was harmful to babies and my vet gave my dog his right infront of my (at the time) 5 month old, my dog even sneezed on the baby immediately after the vaccine went up his nose! I only found out that it was harmful almost exactly 6 weeks after my dog had it and he constantly tries to lick my son's face/hands etc... luckily my son is fine so I'd guess that the risk is low and it's just a precaution, but if you're worried then maybe try to keep your dog off of the furniture where your baby is for a couple of weeks and limit their contact x

As a vet nurse I can say that we generally recommend that people who are immunocompromised shouldn’t be near a dog who’s had the kennel cough vaccine as it is a live vaccine. Having said this, the vet should’ve asked if you were in contact with anyone who’s immunocompromised so from that perspective it’s not very good of the vet that did it.
But if your baby is able older than a year I wouldn’t be concerned. How old is your baby? It is extremely unlikely that your baby contracts any infection but it’s best practice to keep your baby away from the dogs face in general but just as a precaution for the next few weeks too.

I was pregnant when my dogs went for their vaccinations and was advised not to give them the kennel cough vaccine until baby was born and 6 weeks old due to it being a live vaccine. Keeping the dog away for 6 weeks seems like overkill, maybe like 24hrs after don’t let the dog lick or sneeze on the baby just incase there is still some of the spray around the dogs nose.

I mean she saw I had a baby as she was in the waiting room with my partner. Wasn’t until after she told me. My bubs is 11 months. It’s impossible to keep them apart I can’t see me doing so without great stress. Such a nightmare!

the concern is that the virus shreds for up to 6 weeks which is why we advise 6 weeks ☺️

at 11 months I wouldn’t be too concerned but just be mindful I would say! Best of luck 🥰

just seen your original comment, that is very useful and helpful to know! Thank you😊

thank you so much for your comment. Needed that! I live in a small 2 bed lodge at the back of my parents house so keeping them separate will be so hard. But do you think it’s safe to do? I have family that have offered to have her for the week do you think I should do that just to be extra safe? x

also worst case scenario, if my baby was to get poorly from it. Do you know what actually happens like in what way will she get poorly if that makes sense. As Google doesn’t really shed light on that x

it could be similar symptoms to an upper respiratory tract infection. A cough or sore throat and potentially a fever. If she does develop symptoms I would recommend going to the doctor as soon as possible just because she is young and they may consider antibiotics and rest. Kennel cough is very similar to whooping cough in humans but transmission to humans is very low, especially when it’s through vaccination.
The manufacturers, MSD, have no records of any infections in humans caused by the vaccine which is also worth noting. Nor does it say on the guidelines that it poses risk to pregnant women or newborns as other medications do. You could still choose to have the pup go elsewhere for the period of time if it would put your mind more at ease!
If it makes you feel any better, 3 of our 9 vets are pregnant and still administer the live vaccine to dogs 🥰
