Culturally my mother is going to be called Nanny as this is closest to the Bengali way of saying mothers mum. I asked my MIL what she wanted to be called and they all sound like mum. I find it offensive, I’m the mum! I worked so hard to become a mum! I’m soooo close to telling her she has to be called something you can find on a card!

Just respectfully tell her you don’t like those options since it’s too close to mommy and to find something that you can both appreciate. Even give her some recommendations

those options shouldn’t even be considered. they’re so closed to mum. i’d say it’s either nana or grandma. my baby’s grandmother wants to be called gigi which i think is adorable x

Yep my 2 MIL are both mam ma. (One is step, they compete so when one found out what the other was called they both had to have the same) pissed me off but I didn’t say anything because I’m stupid… LO is now 2 1/2. My mum is Granny.

Can her actual name be used to make any cute grandma names? I know a lady named Sandy who goes by Gran San and two named Paula who go by Lala and Lolly (that woman's husband goes by Pop, so together, they're Lolly Pop, which I think is cute, lol).
There are seriously unlimited possibilities of grandma names that WON'T make you feel like MIL is stealing your thunder. My mom was Gammy, and my MIL is Granna. I have a cousin who is Gigi, a friend who is just G, another friend Nena (pronounced knee-nay; I also have an aunt whose grandkids call her Nene, which is just said like knee-knee). I've also heard of a couple women being called Glamma.
Again...the possibilities are endless. I would politely -- but firmly -- tell your MIL that she could either pick a name y'all both can agree on, or she will simply be called Grandma Her Name and will have very limited access to your child.

Mamie/Mammy/ MawMaw means grandma. All of those are just ways to say grandma in different states...

In some places in the uk mammy/mamie is how you say mum so a hell no from me. X

I'm a Mammy , Irish mothers go by mam/ Mammy that's very weird her kids can call her that not grandchild

here, in America, it means grandma. Especially down south
Also Bengali. Babies here now and she is going with Nanna and i only call her it to her face. It’s now offending me that she’s the same as my mum and it’s culturally insensitive.
