Hey everyone! 38 weeks and 5 days pregnant with my first baby and I’m contemplating firing my doula. I went into this pregnancy wanting to have a natural labor and delivery, and had specifics of how I wanted things done. At my 38 week appointment, I was given the option for an elective induction and I chose to schedule it despite that being my original plan. Another factor that went into this decision was that I was 2cm dilated and got my membrane sweeped in hopes of getting things kick started. To make a long story short, my doula only wants to come to the hospital when I was in active labor or want pictures; but in all our prenatal meetings I made it clear that I needed an advocate from the beginning. Also, I don’t feel like she’s being supportive that I’ve changed my mind in wanting an induction and is making me feel less than for it. I’m not sure how to approach the situation but I thought doulas were supposed to support you no matter what decisions you choose? Hopefully I’m making sense.
To add to all of this, my induction was scheduled for today but is now being pushed to 6:00am tomorrow because of how busy they are with walk ins.

I personally did part ways with my doula, she was a good person but my daughter was breeched for a long time and I did all I could but didn’t know if I would have to have a c-section and I didn’t want to feel like I spent money my family could have use for something else if it was inevitable.
Doulas are supposed to support you no matter what you decide but I will say inductions can go either way and most advise against it bc it can lead to a lot of other interventions.
Maybe try to have a talk over the phone and read the agreement you signed and see where it goes
I’m working with a doula (I’m being induced Tuesday!) and did a bunch of interviews with others before choosing one and I get the impression it’s pretty standard for them to come when active labor starts. That said, mine did offer to drop in for the very beginning of my induction because I’m also scared and need an advocate and then go home once I get settled until active labor starts (sometimes it can take a day or more, so it makes sense they can’t hang around for multiple days.) I do feel like she listens very well and respects my wishes even if they change though - I think that’s the red flag in your post for me, that what she says makes you feel “less than” for choosing what feels right for you (definitely not ok!)
Do you feel like you can talk to her openly about this? Maybe there’s a miscommunication and/or a way to get the support you need in the beginning, either in person with a visit or virtually. All the best!!!
I didnt use a doula but I thought it was common about active labor, my first induction took 4 straight days and nights. 4 days!!!!!!! They know this is possible and that's not a length of time most of them are prepared to be away from family. However I 100% think you should let them go if you want to!
As someone who had 2 doulas and who is also a doula, active labor seems more fitting. However, it's when you're ready for support unless it states in the contract for when to call them. Most clients, though, will keep open communication and then decide to have the doula come when active labor is starting.
Unfortunately I paid for my doula in full with my first pregnancy and she wasn’t even able to come to the hospital bc it was Covid. I decided to go without a doula this time. My doula supported me on the phone but honestly it wasn’t worth it and also I felt very gaslit by the whole hypnobirthing thing which really doesn’t work IMO. Not all doulas are hypnobirthing but I was very convinced labor wouldn’t hurt and it was all in your head and my baby was the perfect size for my body yada yada and it wasn’t true
