My LO (7wks + 3d) has dropped a centile at his last weigh in and has only gained 100g in the week since. He's been referred for a tongue tie cut. We're EBF and he feeds quite often every 2ish hours for a long time 40 mins on average. I don't have any nipple pain and all the midwives/HV have said latch and positioning look good.
The HV mentioned today that his slow weight gain could be down to the fact he's burning more calories and working harder to get the milk (due to tongue tie) therefore feeding more often/longer.
Has anyone else been through something similar and their little one bounced back weight wise?
Thanks!

Conoce más sobre nuestras reglas.I did, she lost 14.8% in the first week and was only gaining about 7g a week at one point. She had it cut at 3 weeks, and feeding improved a little although I don't know if it really was the tongue tie. I think she struggled to feed because of jaundice, she was so sleepy and I had difficult delivery which meant my milk wasn't really there. I had to top her up on formula despite triple feeding (boob, then pump and formula), it was absolute hell. At almost 4 months we are down to two 75ml bottle top ups and the rest boob. We can't go any further because my milk isn't enough but compared to no breastfeeding at week 2 on instruction from paed (which i learnt i shouldn't have done) i think we've done well to get to this point breastfeeding. 100g a week sounds like heaven to me I'm not going to lie! They do sometimes drop a line and settle on that one instead, as long as they don't drop across two I wouldn't worry too much. They don't always gain week on week as I know from 48hr/5 day/weekly weigh ins. Xxx
That was an essay I'm sorry haha! I would just offer whenever they show sign of rooting, always both boobs, lots of skin to skin. I think you're doing amazing, keep going. Are you in touch with a lactation consultant? They are worth their weight in gold xxx
If baby has a tongue tie I would highly recommend getting it released. Not all HV are qualified the same as a tongue tie practitioner. Have they told you how long the referral will take as if they are saying latch is fine they might not refer soon enough and it might be best going private (worth asking them how long the wait is). They took the absolute mick with me when I requested a referral. We waited weeks and they never answered my calls or called me back. I gave up and went private instead.
Hopefully once the tie has been cut baby will be able to gain weight with feeding better and more efficiently. After the release you will need to do plenty of oral exercises to ensure the tie does not reattach. X
@Claire thank you! I'm sorry you've been through such a journey with your little one. I'm sure your doing great too!! We're booked in to see a lactation consultant next week. x
@Farihah we're not sure of the wait times but we've decided to go privately as I don't think the wait it worth it and rather have it sorted sooner than later!
Hiya! I'm a breastfeeding counselor. From what you've said, it does sound that baby is having some transfer difficulties. Do you find they get tired when feeding? And has breaks between actively feeding? If this is the case, and baby does have a tongue tie, then a release would likely help. In the meantime if you do breast compressions while baby feeds, that should help get more milk into him and make it slightly easier for him. It might also be worth doing a little pumping after his feeds, as sometimes if baby isn't transferring well in the early weeks, it can have an impact on supply, which also will affect baby's weight gain, so making sure you have a good supply is also important.
Totally agree about checking your wait time, although as baby isn't gaining well hopefully it will be a priority and not too long. If you wanted to go private, you can find tt practitioners here https://www.tongue-tie.org.uk/find-a-practitioner
I have an 8mo who had kind of similar, though we bottle fed. He went from 75th centile to 40th in the first couple of weeks, we kept getting fobbed off because we bottle feed so noone wanted to investigate. We went private and found out he had a severe tongue tie which was released at 8 weeks. It took a few days for feeding to get back to a good rhythm and he struggled at first but now his weight has been really steady and he is thriving 🩵
That’s great. Have you managed to find someone local to you? The link Charlotte has provided in her comment is the best way to go - all those qualified will come up on there and you can filter it to your preferred distance etc.
@Charlotte thanks Charlotte! Yes he's tired when feeding and often falls asleep, but wakes up as soon as he's taken off the breast and wants to immediately feed again. Definitely takes breaks too. Thank you for the compression suggestion I'll definitely give this a go and I'm already pumping after feeds – though a little more vigilant with it now!
@Amy ah I'm sorry you kept getting fobbed off but glad you got it sorted! Did you notice an immediate difference in how he took his bottle or it was just over a few days as he relearned as you said?
@Farihah yes it's someone a few people in my area have used before!
Our lo has all the symptoms of a tongue tie and has a definite lip tie. We are combi feeding and poor thing doesn’t manage to finish her bottle within the hour and feeds on the breast for 40+ minutes falling asleep a lot. She lost 15.4% body weight in the first 3 weeks and took ages to get back to her birth weight. She’s now plotting well on the 25th percentile but it’s a hard slog. We have our appointment at the tongue tie clinic on Tuesday (9 weeks old)
@Karen how were they able to tell she has a lip tie? Was it easily noticeable?
Did she have a lot of top ups whilst combi feeding?
I noticed that it looked different to mine and asked. Basically the stringy bit starts at the bottom of her gum. I checked mine my husbands and my two step kids before asking the infant feeding team.
We were supplementing every breastfeed with formula and then I pumped . Did that for the first 4 weeks until it became unmanageable with my husband going back to work. Now I breastfeed and wait 15 minutes and if she’s still hungry she gets formula. I pump twice a day. Once first thing and one before I go to bed.
We noticed a difference within the first few hours. I will say it felt like the feeding got worse before it got better, but that's because he really had a lot to relearn!
After the release it didn't actually just affect feeding/gas, he also released a load of tension and his whole body changed it was crazy. He never opened his hands before and he did this within hours, his jaw moved forwards, his neck would extend and not be hunched in. Honestly the best thing we ever did for him - but the first 24 hours I thought it was a mistake because getting milk in was really hard. It improved really quickly so just ride it out if that happens to you and it will definitely get better.
