So my baby boy was born yesterday morning and I tried to breast feed and managed 15 minutes on each breast but omg it was sooooooo painful 😣😣😣😣, he has a tongue tie but not sure if that affects the way he feeds. I tried to breast feed 3 more times and felt like everytime he would latch it was even more painful than the first time! So I switched to bottles and formula which he has been drinking but I can tell he is suffering from reflux and now I'm wondering if I should try him on the boob again because apparently he is less likely to suffer with reflux when drinking breast milk.
Need advice and tips on how to breast feed without pain or if there's any recommended videos to show a good latch. The midwife said I had 'good nipples' for breast feeding 😅 so I'm hoping I can do this 🙏 any advice will be appreciated xxx

Check her out on Instagram. She has story highlights and if you scroll right along there’s diagram pictures for deep latch and different positions. She also has one on tongue tie!
The pain will ease I promise! Once you crack the latch it shouldn’t hurt! Good luck xx

It was painful for me for the first month but I kept unlatching her and making sure she got more areola in her mouth and that helped. I’ve heard tongue ties can affect it too.

It’s pretty painful the first few weeks until your nipples get used to it and heal up (use some nipple cream). Just keep trying to stick with it, you got this momma!

It was so painful for me at first! We got my LO's tongue tie released and that helped but he had to relearn how to suck, so it took some time. However I'm glad I pushed through - 5 months exclusively BF and going strong!

It was painful for me and my lactation consultant said he was latching perfectly. It hurts. I cried a few times. I had to build up calluses on my nipples. It took me about a month before it got better but after that, everything was golden ❤️
My only advice is to power through it. It isn’t an easy journey by any means but so worth it after you get over that hurtle

We had to use nipple Shields in the beginning

My daughter had a 75% tongue tie and nipple shield are what helped me!

Your midwife should be able to assist you to see if the tongue tie is affecting his latch. My baby boy has a slight tie which caused a shallow latch, I had to help ‘push’ his head to my nipple when his mouth was wide open.
Also try reposting in the LC breastfeeding group on here. They are quite helpful x

Have you got a pump? You could try expressed breast milk in a bottle.

My little guy also has a tongue tie and so I pumped and fed him my milk through a bottle for the first couple months. Now that he is a bit bigger (and his mouth is bigger) it’s a bit easier to breastfeed and we’re using a nipple shield. Without the shield I get blisters and cracking and bleeding. It’s going wonderfully with the shield and while it’s not as easy because you have to put something on, it’s definitely worth a try to have the experience.
Talk to your pediatrician about the reflux too! We had some difficulty in the beginning with the bottle feeding because it flows so quickly. You could try pacing the bottle feeds. Look up pacing on YouTube and there are plenty of examples. That’s how we learned. Good luck!

I would recommend medula nipple shields.. they are £8/9 from boots and saved my life with breast feeding! Stopped him eating my nipples and let them repair- they make breast feeding much more manageable and I don’t have any pain now! X

Its always so painful in the beginning. Cracking, bleeding and stings. After a week or 2 ur nipples will be tough as nails and it wont phase u one bit! Ive never tried nipple shields but it seems like they may b ur best bet

ahhhh i hope you are getting more support and a tongue tie referral

At the beginning it is painful! For your breast and for your tummy as the uterus is tightening from the breastfeeding. However after the 1st-2nd week its gone. 100% recommend breastfeeding! 👌🏻😊

Get those ties fixed ASAP!! Seriously. Oral ties practically killed my breastfeeding relationship with my first child. But, you could always pump and feed baby breastmilk from a bottle if you’re not wanting to physically breastfeed due to pain.

Nipple shields are a lifesaver 🙏🏻

I would recommend a lactation consultant for the latch and tongue tie consultation, and see the pediatrician for dealing with reflux

My baby has a tounge tie and after a few weeks the pain will go with breast feeding. I would recommended just doing whatever you find easiest but great if you can breast feed xx

If you decide to try again, ask your family doctor for a prescription for Newman's All Purpose Nipple Ointment. It helps sooo much with pain. It will still take some time for breastfeeding to go smoothly for both you and your baby, but the ointment helps in the meantime to make it more bearable. There is also some good information on the website of the International Breastfeeding Center (which is where Dr Newman who created the ointment is based out of.) I almost gave up on breastfeeding so many times because I couldn't imagine how it could possibly get better, but somehow it did and now there's no pain.

It hurts at the beginning and if he has tongue tie, check that because it could effect his latch. Make sure his latch is proper as well. Speak with a lactation consultant while at the hospital to make sure everything is good. If everything is good then keep nursing. It will be easy after a few days
