Looking for anyone with knowledge of receiving a tax rebate whilst on mat leave. I went on mat leave mid feb this year, 26 weeks full pay, then it will drop to SMP. Planning on taking the full year, last 3 months unpaid. My usual salary is around 58k, and i’ve still been taxed the higher rate as if I was going to make the same again this tax year. When and how is the tax returned to you? Thanks!

Learn more about our guidelines. You’ll be charged the same rate of tax whilst you’re being paid full pay. When your salary drops down to SMP you will receive the tax rebate in that same payslip
I got a letter with a cheque in at the end of the tax year 🙂 if you call to complain I am sure it can be sorted before then!
If you're on the normal tax code for this year (1257L) then you will receive this rebate when your pay drops as your tax is calculated monthly on a cumulative basis taking in to account that months taxable pay and the tax you have already paid this tax year.
