Midwife vs ob-gyn

Sorry for the stupid question but I am from Italy living in the USA and things are much different here than there (like a lot different 😂). So what’s the different between having a midwife than an ob-gyn. Can you have both ?! Which one is better?! I have a doctor but I see a lot of woman they talk about midwife and I am trying to understand if I made the right choice choosing a doctor rather than midwife

Midwife will be more naturally minded and less intervention driven. They are in tune with how a woman's body works in birth and are inclined to let it do its thing. An obgyn is a surgeon with specific training in lady parts. They are more inclined to work on a time line and expect "clinically normal" progression. Anything that wavers outside of that line will lead them to push interventions.
You can have both if you like. A hospital midwife almost always works within a group practice that includes obgyn so one is on call at any time. If you go with a birth center they don't typically have an obgyn on premises but do have the ability to transfer to hospital, even if they cannot accompany you in the hospital. At that pint the on call obgyn would take over.

Emily did a really good explanation. I just wanted to add one thing. If there is a higher chance you may have a complicated birth, I would recommend going to a hospital for birth instead of a birth center. Even though they can transfer you, it would obviously be faster to get treatment if you're already in the hospital. Also, if you are thinking of getting an epidural, a birth center may not offer that.

Can you have a midwife and an ob while pregnant? At least until you decide what route you want to take?

Thank you! 😊

I had a midwife with my first son and she was incredible. Very holistic, and sensitive to my needs and intune with the female body. Obgyns are more scientific and medical obviously but the main difference is the care you want. Do you want a more homeopathic method to your pregnancy or do you want by the book science. Either way is great but that's my basic explanation for the difference. ❤️

. I know my last pregnancy the OB office I went to also had midwives in office but the doctor would deliver the babies...that OB was really fast to medically intervene during my labor unfortunately (episiotomy). midwives obviously wont because they can not. But there are OBs who are more inclined to deliver babies naturally than others you need to do some research in your community.
