Hi, I was identified as having a short cervix yesterday. A few weeks ago the length measured 37mm at 17 + 1, but yesterday at 20 + 1 it measured 19mm. I was kept in hospital and am awaiting a cerclage today. Just a but worried that it has decreased so much in a short amount of time - I dont know if this is unusual and I'm worried as I read the cerclage doesn't prevent the cervix from shortening further so if it continues at this rate there'll be nothing left at 23 weeks and I could just be solely relying on the stitch. I will be asking the doc a bunch of questions when they do the rounds but I am just looking for a bit of reassurance from ladies who have been in a similar situation as there seems to be some much differing information out there.
Thanks

Learn more about our guidelines.Hey, sorry to hear. I too had to have an emergency cerclage. At 18 weeks +4 I was measuring borderline at 25mm. By 19 + 3 , I was measuring only 5mm! I had to get an emergency stitch. I was also put on progesterone.
I had my appointment at 21 + 3, I am currently at 22.3mm with 12mm above the stitch, so I have hope, especially from being 5mm
I would say try and have hope, ask your doctors lots of questions and maybe see if they will put you on progesterone as this helped me greatly.
After my stitch, I put myself on pelvic rest and moderate bed rest and try not to stand or do to much walking either. I am currently 22 + 5 , and just trying to keep positive xxx
I got an emergency cerclage at 22+6 while measuring 4mm. I also took the progesterone capsules till 36w when my doctor took the cerclage off. My baby was born full term at 39+1.
I kept my activities light, no heavy lifting or sex. The cerclage definitely gave me peace of mind.
@Chizara @Muna thank you so much for your reassurance, I really needed this today. I know the doc mentioned there are risks with having cerclage but I guess that comes with all surgery. The doc has also told me I can have progesterone as there is no harm and I would rather through everything and the kitchen sink at it!
Muna congrats on your arrival and Chizara all the best with the rest of your pregnancy but it sound like things are moving in a positive direction. Hoping I will join you ladies with some good results after the procedure xxx
Had cerclage at 16 weeks which increased my cervix length to 24mm. But then the stitch came loose and it shorten to 4mm funnelling at 22 weeks so i had a rescue cerclage at 22 weeks. Then the length increased to 23mm. But then two weeks later it shorter to 8mm. Though the stitch is still holding there. I’ll be at 27 weeks this week, still holding. :) i have been kept in hospital for observation since the rescue stitch, but i think they might discharge me at 28 weeks if the stitch is still holding. Just keep looking forward and feel grateful for each day. :) time will fly by.
