@Elizabeth to the pharmacy I go then…
If you are exclusively breastfeeding round the clock then you should be protected - https://www.uhbristol.nhs.uk/patients-and-visitors/your-hospitals/st-michaels-hospital/what-we-do/midwifery-services/post-birth-contraception/lactational-amenorrhea-method-(lam)
Wow @Sophie that is interesting.
I would still be careful with that one- a friend got caught out this way!
Unless you want another baby, get the morning after just in case!!!
@Sophie I was told by my midwife not to assume I’m protected if I’m breastfeeding as so many women she’s seen thought they were but ended up pregnant so soon after giving birth because they thought they were
@Jazz NICE guidance says that:
"When used perfectly (consistently and correctly), 0.5% of women will conceive during the first 6 months after childbirth due to method failure.
When used typically, 2% of women will conceive during the first 6 months after childbirth due to method failure or user failure."
Those are better odds than condoms which have a yearly 2% failure rate for perfect use, 18% for typical use. Obviously everyone has to make their own risk/benefit decisions, but the evidence says that this is really effective as long as all of the criteria are met:
1) amenorrhea (periods haven't returned)
2) fully or nearly fully breastfeeding (intervals between feedings not exceeding 4 hours during the day or 6 hours at night)
3) <6 months postpartum

@Sophie my midwife told me you have to breastfeed every 8 minutes to be protected 😬
@Tanya has she confused that with 8x a day? Because every 8 minutes is exponentially higher than what the research suggests is needed.
Or maybe that if you're feeding every 8 minutes you don't have time to have sex? That would work pretty well as contraception!
Same! I’m breastfeeding and hoping that will protect me! I just had my 6 week check up last week and have to wait 2 months for an appointment to get the coil fitted so they have prescribed me a mini pill until then but hope to god I’m ok for this last week 🙏🏼
