So I’ve never breast fed and never got milk last time after my emergency c section but would really like to try to collect some liquid gold colostrum if I’m spelling it right ! Any one no how and when to start ??

Learn more about our guidelines.Think it’s a month or so before you are due. I didn’t collect any (found it really weird and fiddly), just waited for my baby to be born to latch on and get it that way.
My girl stopped breastfeeding at 3 so it’s been a VERY successful journey without doing it :)
I would check with your OBGYN when they advise it is safe for you to start trying to collect colostrum because nipple stimulation can cause contractions/labor. Usually it is safe to start around 36 weeks. You can hand express but I was able to use my breast pump (momcozy m5). 30 mins 1-2x/day. Haaka and some other brands make silicone syringes you can use to collect the collustrum and freeze it. I pumped for about 2.5 weeks before i got anything, and even then it was only a few drops. I had a c-section and was thankful to have those few drops to give to my baby while we waited for my milk to come in.
I started collecting at 37 weeks. Hand expression is the best way, but you've got to really commit. I was attempting to collect twice a day for 7-10 min each time. I collected a TOTAL of like 10 ml split into multiple silicone syringes.
I'll tell you this: It's hard. A lot of time for very little reward... but it's a labor of love. The nurses were really impressed that I even put the effort in, but it substantially brought down any anxiety I had and made me feel more connected to my son before giving birth.
My son has been exclusively breastfed since birth, and my first son was BF for 15 months, so feel free to message me with any questions you might have about BF in general!
Yes they made a very big deal about colostrum in the NICU. It's great for the babies. But I didn't have to do anything special. It was just all that came out the first few pumps after birth. We used q tips to wipe it in her mouth. Not sure if that's necessary for a full term baby. You would probably be able to just try latching right away. Good luck!
I also didn't collect any before my baby was born. He spent a couple of days with a breathing tube (probably unnecessarily because he could always breathe fine, but that's a different story) but after that they gave him what colostrum I managed to collect before my milk came in. It's very thick and sticky so it's hard to collect with a pump. Hand expression is better. The volume will also be very low, but that's okay! That's just how colostrum is. Babies don't need a large volume right after they're born. Collect with syringes.
I started hand expressing around 35ish weeks and didn’t go into labor until 41+3. I collected around 70 ml total those few weeks in 1-3ml syringes I got from Amazon for cheap and stored them in freezer. There’s video tutorials on got to hand express it’s better than using a pump. I brought some to the hospital in a cooler just incase my baby didn’t latch right away and I wanted to avoid formula and she did end up having some colostrum in a bottle nipple the first day before we saw the LLC and when we needed to get her weight up before my milk came in we gave her extra syringes after breastfeeding. You can also save some for when they’re sick at any point as it’s very nutrient rich.
Hey I just started yesterday I'm 37 weeks and 3 days! Midwife advised to do it 15 mins per day and massage the breast with my fist you can sterilise a container for the syringe and keep in fridge for up to 2 days and re use the same syringe before freezing, ensure to label as well. I have filled 2 little 1 ml syringes!
They say not to before 37 weeks as there's a chance it could bring on labour (didn't work for me). I found it a bit tricky as it takes 2 hands to express and I don't have a 3rd hand for sucking it up into the syringe so it took a long time. I ended up using everything I expressed though. I'd recommend watching some videos of how before trying it.
