Apparently a controversial take but I love rocking my son to sleep! People always told me I shouldn’t, that I’d be making a rod for my own back because he apparently won’t EVER self soothe. I’m just here to say it’s a load of rubbish.
My son is almost 4 months old and 90% of the time I rock or pat him to sleep. Why wouldn’t I? He’s FOUR months old. So many adults rely on white noise, podcasts, earplugs, relaxation tapes (used to be me) to fall asleep. Are people trying to tell me they wouldn’t loved their back tickled or hair stroked to fall asleep? Why would I deprive my child of comfort to help him doze off😂
How can we expect brand new little humans to fall asleep with no soothing?🙄
What are some ways you soothe your babas? Ivan also loves bum pats, hair strokes and his cheeks stroked (which I love because they’re soft and chubby)

Learn more about our guidelines.I rocked to sleep until 5.5 months when I sleep trained. My boys 98th centile and my back couldn’t take it anymore 🤣 I didn’t mind it till he got ridiculously heavy haha!
Bum taps and tummy cuddles on my chest are my favourites!
until my little one is in her own room, then I am not look at starting self soothing and my HV has said that is fine.
They go through hundreds of different sleep patterns throughout their lives so while they’re so little I will be cherishing every moment with her and enjoying these cuddles at bed time because one day it will be my last and I won’t even know it at the time!
Besides when she goes down for her sleep she is down for the night from 9/10pm - 2/3am feed and back to sleep till 7/8am fine by me if she is happy for now I’m happy. She is nearly 3 months old and thriving it’s our routine and we love it!
@Bella oh god bless you haha! We just rock him on our chest because my back could never (scoliosis). Just move him up and down haha - is that even rocking?!😂
@Rae sometimes in the night now he’s 12.5 months I do that to him the bounce it makes me die how rough they want the bounce to be to fall asleep aswell 🤣🤣
@Shaney absolutely agree with you! Ivan goes down at 9, dreamfeed and taken to our room at 11-11:30. Today he woke at 4:45, back down by 5:30 (2 bum changes and bf on both sides) and then didn’t wake until 9:45am, I woke up before him! a lot of nights he sleeps through until 8 after his dreamfeed! I’m not fixing what’s not broken 😂
@Bella I know! Ivan bloody loves it. The more aggressive the better 😂
I saw a reel saying how there are hundreds of products on the market aimed at helping babies sleep, rocking/vibrating cribs, white noise machines, Ewen the dream sheep, snooze pods, rockit for prams and people are quick to recommend these products but as soon as mother rocks and shushes her baby herself people lose their minds 🥴
@Amber exactly! Make it make sense because my brain can’t comprehend it 😂
I gently bounce mine on a yoga ball and she loves it. We cuddle and sing songs and I feel her fall asleep in my arms. She sleeps 11 hours some nights (usually does a stretch of minimum 8 hours) at 5 months.
If anyone wants to tell me there’s anything wrong with that they can whistle.
I breastfeed and rock mine to sleep every night and I don’t intend to stop anytime soon, because it works, and I put her in her crib and she sleeps so well in there. I bought a rocking chair for this very purpose. I just listen to an audiobook while she feeds and falls asleep and that’s my relaxing time as well.
I gently bounced/rocked my son to sleep for months. Once he hit 11/12 months he was suddenly able to self settle for naps and then night time sleep too. Even at 5 he likes a long cuddle on his bed before he goes to sleep
Isn’t it mad that doing what feels natural and rocking our babies to sleep is seen as controversial! 🤯
@Sophie good for you! I feed Ivan to sleep as well but we are trying to wean that out for his naps as ofc I’m not always going to be there and my mum and husband can’t bf him to sleep haha
@Hannah yep they can take a running jump! What a fab sleeper x
@Chelsey nothing wrong with that at all! I’m almost 28 and like my back tickled to help me fall asleep 😂
@Gemma absolute insanity if you ask me x
We did bum pats, cuddles, rocking, singing. A sling/carrier was a godsend as she got bigger to do the rocking bit.
She always fell asleep with her hands on my face when she was younger right until almost 2. I mean one either side like she was cupping my face too 😍
@Natalie aw how lovely!
@Rae I have loads of photos of her like that. Even when in a sling at over one she'd do it too
@Natalie omg this is so bloody cute! 😍
@Natalie oh look at her! I miss the contact naps! X
@Gemma me too. She doesn't nap at all anymore! Only had the odd ones when travelling since Christmas.
We did go away a couple of weeks ago and she slept for a smidge on the plane next to/on me.
@Natalie Leo is 3.5 now and hasn’t really napped since around 2 except maybe a couple of in the car ones and on the plane!
@Gemma my daughter will be 3 in July. Same here since Christmas.
@Amber we have the snoo bassinet rocking crib and it’s the best thing we bought!
My baby loves bum pats and the good ole boob of course!😂❤️
@Becky I bet it is a lifesaver!! Wish they had them when I had my middle, needs to be rocked forever, child 😅
I rocked my little one to sleep until she was about 18 months. She always contact napped on me too. She's always slept in her cot at bedtime and always slept amazingly well... 10-12 hours every night!
You rock away and enjoy those moments with your baby x
