Has anyone had a third degree tear with a previous pregnancy and went on to having another vaginal birth and avoiding the same tear?
I had a 3A tear due to my son coming out with his hand over his face and this time round ive gone for an elective section but I did say if I was to go into natural labor before hand then I’m happy to try vaginal birth again but knowing my luck I’ll get another third or a forth degree tear and won’t heal as good first time round 😩

Learn more about our guidelines.Yes! Mine healed up, and I was able to deliver my second with less tearing.
Yes me!
Had a 3A tear with my first and then when I was pregnant with my second I had to have an internal scan where they checked how it had healed. They told me it had healed really well and I had the option of an elective section or a vaginal delivery.
I opted for the vaginal just from a recovery point of view and although I did tear again with my second it wasn't as bad as the first (only a second degree) and it was only because she came so quickly!! (1.5 hours active labour and 8 mins of pushing!)
Did you have a scan where they have advised how it has healed? X
@Beth no I never had a examination or a scan! Which at first I thought I was going too as I had to see a consultant to go through birthing options and because my notes from my physio/gyno was happy with my healing and scaring tissue plus I’ve had no problems or sensitivity down there since healing … they’ve kind of given me the all clear without checking, now I wish they did give me the internal scan or examination just for me to feel a bit more confident with a vaginal birth again as I would of liked to atleast give it a try if he decides to come before my section next week x
@Rachel that's so strange! Like how would they know it's healed if they haven't looked?
But if you feel happy and like you've healed well then I would say give it a go?
I actually had a section booked because of my tear but then the more I thought about it the more I knew I wanted a vaginal birth and they were happy to support that.
There are lots of things they can do to prevent tearing as well such as a warm compress while baby is crowning, different birthing positions etc I requested these and they were happy to do them but then she literally came so fast! X
@Beth exactly! I’m actually seeing my midwife today who said she may do a sweep if I’m dilated but I remember her looking at my notes from my physio and gynocologist who done an examination 6 months after I had my son and they said scaring tissue has healed fine, pelvic floor feels good ect so I’m not sure if they’ve just gone by that aswell as me saying I feel fine down there but it’s just the thought of undoing a repair that is good and not being as lucky next time round and having a 3rd or even a 4th and recovering worse cause imagine 😭 that’s why I booked a section cause I didn’t want to be over due or possibly induced and feel stressed.
Doesn’t help every scan I’ve had baby has his hand over his face and that’s why I tore first time round cause it was a compound labor where he come out with his hand under his chin 😩😩 x
