Delivering at Newham Hospital

Please could people share their birthing experiences at Newham hospital? Good and bad. I have heard quite mixed reviews and it’s making it difficult deciding if I chose Newham or not…

I was really nervous about going to Newham based on things I’d read online but I had a wonderful experience there. I had a c-section as I was high risk and ended up staying in for a week after. Every member of staff there was wonderful, very patient and kind towards me and my family. I would definitely recommend.

I know it’s had a bad reputation in the past (and I’m sure there are still bad days!) but my experience there was amazing. I had an emergency c section and all the staff were fantastic. And I was so well looked after afterwards. Cannot praise them enough for my experience. I hope you are the same!

I moved from Newham hospital halfway in my pregnancy to Royal London in Whitechapel. The change in care and facilities was unbelievable. I am now with Royal again with the second one. But I also know ladies who liked Newham one too...

Newham is my closest hospital but I chose Homerton because it’s CQC scores were a lot higher than Newham’s.

@Aga hey I would be birthing at Royal London as well. Can you tell me how was the entire experience and was it a natural delivery or C-section and can we opt for private rooms

I had a good experience at Newham in the birth centre all the midwives were fantastic. A friend chose homerton due to cqc scores etc and had a horrendous experience. My point being that I think you will find positive and negative stories/experiences anywhere. I stayed with Newham as it is my closest, felt easier to get to and from etc.

@Sian @Nina @Chloe thank you for sharing. When was your experience at Newham? Was it recently? I also wanted to go to Homerton because it’s rated as excellent (and I was born there too 😊) but it’s a bit too far and with traffic it can be a nightmare to get to.

Parking is also a nightmare at Homerton apparently. I had my little girl November 2021 xx

@Chloe definitely, for the appts I’ve been to, I’ve had to park a little bit away to the hospital!

@Meena we were there right at the end of August

I was there at the beginning of August. I started IVF treatment at Homerton and found the staff incredibly rude and insensitive so like Chloe said I think everywhere you’ll find positive and negative feedback. I also agree that parking is very tricky at Homerton whereas generally Newham is fine and free after the first ticket if you are staying in for a while if you ask the staff to validate the parking for you.

I gave birth at Newham in December and I had a lovely experience. I ended up being induced and the hospital wing was amazing - birth pools, swings, everything. The staff were very kind. We were there at the time of the strikes and so that affected us a bit but that’s obviously not their fault.

In my experience, Night staff at Newham were horrible but day shift nurses were more caring.

I was induced in Newham hospital but I ended up with emergency c section. There was always lack of beds for mothers I waited days to be moved from one ward to another. Some of the midwives were really arrogant but some were really nice. I will probably choose a different place to give birth next time

Thank you for sharing, that sounds lovely. I had planned for birthing at the Barking Birth Centre which looked lovely and had a lovely pool in the room but plans have now changed. Unfortunately my baby is measuring small and the growth has slowed and isn’t progressing as it should be so they have booked me in for an induction on Thursday at Newham so I have no choice but to be on the ward at Newham 😞. I’m feeling really uneasy about the whole situation that I just can’t even manage to sleep 😞

The worst thing is when I asked for a painkiller there, anything, did not get it...eventually I did not have a choice , decided to give a birth quick and go back home with my baby.When I felt the pain I prayed and listen some podcasts, just tried to entertain myself.Actually I have a positive memories from that time, 90% of time there I spent on my own but I could ask a nurse to come any time.

I had emergency c-section in new ham the nurses there was wonderful! I had no partner throughout the night it’s my first baby ever and I was so concern over everything I cried a lot I was scared that I don’t know how to feed baby I had nurse that sitted next to me for good 3 hours at night and tell me how to breast feed and how to do and that I’m doing great I will never forget this experience ❤️

I opted to not use my two local hospitals which are Newham (closest) and Royal London (next closest) due to being chronically sick and having practically lived my whole teen life in Newham and had my whole adult life care consultant team at Royal London and I absolutely hated everything about the two hospitals. I have chose UCLH as the CQC and general care are much better! 40 minutes away but overall I can’t say I have regretted anything yet but I do sometimes think about what would happen if I ended up at Newham hospital instead as everyone I know hasn’t had great experiences there 😬

@Hollie I've done the same

@Meena how was it?

@Meena hey, would also be keen to know how you got on in the end! X

@Sy X @Nayyab in all honestly it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was understaffed and overworked. At every shift change, most nurses and doctors would end up staying beyond their working hours to do by a couple of hours. Considering the pressures, the care I received was good. You had the odd person that was not so great but there were also many nice staff members that were kind, caring and attentive to the best the could be. I was in there for almost 2 weeks and it seemed like forever. The induction ward was busy and could be noisy at times but any issues I would let the ward nurse in charge know and she’d sort it out. All the doctors from start to finish I could not fault as they were all very good. The labour ward was actually great. Once I got up there I constantly had 1:1 care and I was in active labour for 18 hours. So I saw a few shift changes and every single midwife I had was great.

Mother and baby ward was good but the space you get in the bays are very small and being there for quite sometime it didn’t feel great. I felt very enclosed lacking natural daylight but again, staff seemed to do their best. I was offered breastfeeding support that night that I arrived on the ward with my baby and also every morning they have a breastfeeding class that is free to attend which was also very helpful. Overall it was ok. I think I just got extremely fed up as I was there for a long time.

Reading this has low key scared me . Gave birth first time in royal London however due to postcode they said no . Planned birth in birthing centre but due to super low iron levels and risk of bleeding at 38 weeks I have to now give birth in Newham . I am gutted .

@Rima don’t be scared. Mine was a very lengthy process because I was induced. Hopefully yours will be fine and you’ll go into labour naturally then you shouldn’t need to stay in hospital for almost 2 weeks like I did. If your just in and out I think you’ll be ok. Once your on the labour ward they are very good.
