First time breast feeding

Had my baby boy on the 16th so 3 days ago now ( still In hospital ) , I’ve been trying to breast feed and he’s just not latching onto my actual nipple. The midwife’s gave me nipple shields to help get milk down him and they’ve worked amazingly. Although a midwife came in today and told me today that I shouldn’t use nipple shields for long and try get him used to my nipple, I do keep trying but he won’t latch😩 nipple shields are the only option right now in order to get him to feed, otherwise he just won’t latch and gets so stressed. I’m worried that he’s gotten too used to the nipple Sheilds😩 also is it normal for newborns to be feeding for about 8-10 mins? He just pushes himself away and goes to sleep. Yesterday he had a moment where he fed for a good 20 minutes but today feels like he’s fed shorter today. I just want to make sure I’m doing the best job.

As others have said midwives are hit and miss. See a Lactation Consultant, your hospital might be able to refer you to one, or you may need to see one privately depending on your local NHS

I’m not sure about the nippled shield from my own personal use but I had a friend who used it and eventually graduated up to no shield and everything was fine. The thing with the nursing time is all relative. He could have a better latch one time and not as good the next. You could be fuller so a strong letdown. Also key thing, those postpartum sweats are there for a reason. Your body heats up when nursing to put baby back to sleep. When nursing, unswaddle your LO or even open up their outfit to keep them from getting too warm and falling asleep too soon. Hope this helps a little! You’re doing amazing

Midwives aren’t fully trained in breastfeeding, get an appointment with an IBCLC best thing I don’t, my boy is almost 18 months and still feeding x
