Autism Advice

Hello friends! My 22 month old daughter has been recommended by our pediatrician to undergo an autism evaluation. Her appointment isn’t for another few months but she’s starting early steps therapy to hopefully jumpstart her speech and skills. I’m a first time mama and I’m not sure where she should be at I know everyone learns at their own pace but she is delayed for sure. She goes through more bad days than good and it’s been really hard on me and I just want to do the best thing I possibly can for her. This is the most stressful thing I’ve had to go through! If anyone else has experienced or is going through the same thing I need all the advice, tips, tricks, whatever! Thank you besties ☺️

I think it’s great you got the appointment set up and getting on this early. I watched my mom take care of my nephew who’s high functioning but on the spectrum. She put him on a gluten free, organic diet (minimal processed foods) and it really helped him. Even his teachers noticed a difference in his attention span and behavior. I think even if it turns out it’s not what she has, it’s still a great diet!

I use to work in early intervention with autism children from ages 1-3 in nyc & i will say they are really hands on & cater to each Childs specific needs & learning skills. It definitely helps hands down I’ve seen it!

My kid is also showing signs of autism and has a 'profound' language delay. I just have to remember that to me, he's perfect the way he is.

Also today we qualified for early intervention which is completely free in my state and is two extra sessions of in person therapy a month. We are already seeing a speech therapist once a week.

What was the reason the pediatrician recommended an autism evaluation if you don’t mind me asking

@Amy thank you for the advice! Getting her on a good diet is also a huge concern of mine considering she’s getting pretty picky so I’ll give this a shot!

@Angelika this makes me feel better about it I was a little nervous they are suppose to come to our house sometimes and most over zoom other times. I’m trusting the process the team we’ve talked to were super nice ❤️

@Sadaa non verbal, meltdowns, hand leading, strange eye movement while spinning especially when over stimulated, running away in stores/ down the street if we’re playing outside, pacing back and forth, hyper fixating on something for an extended period of time like stacking cups or plates or playing with water, limited eye contact, doesn’t play with us or have interest in playing with others, lack of response to her name, can’t perform small every day tasks when asked

@Alyssa yes I understand but you got this supermom no worries!

As an autistic person and a mamma, it’s great that you are getting an early check in, it really helps to be able to understand your child. Autistic people’s brains function differently and it’s helpful to know that. I also wanted to say you don’t have to agree to ABA(applied behavioral therapy) research if you are unaware of the controversy on this- even if that’s what your doctor recommends. OT can be really helpful. And most importantly she’s still your daughter she just has a different way of seeing and being in the world which I’m sure you already know. Patience as she navigates this world that was made for neurotypical people will go so far. 💗 much love mamma, you will both do great!

@Chelsea thank you for the advice that’s awesome! She’s my little bestie who never fails to make me laugh and love and I wouldn’t change a thing. Just getting difficult to meet her needs but the more education I think the better. We’re both learning every day ❤️

@Amy yes! Esp if they eliminate all # dyes as well!
