Migraine with aura

Hi, I’ve had migraines with aura since I was 14, no particular patterns or triggers apart from tiredness and thirst. They come randomly, I deal with them, they go and it’s back to normal. I found out a few days ago I’m expecting my first baby and yesterday I got a migraine with aura. Usually the aura lasts an hour and I end up with a headache or silent migraine. The problem is my vision still isn’t 100% back to my normal. The aura isn’t fully there still but there’s like a visual disturbance in the outside of my right eye….is this likely to be just because of the hormone changes with being pregnant? I had read that migraines got better when pregnant but clearly my thoughts might have been wrong? Advise please? 🙈

Hello! I have had this same issue growing up. I haven’t had one while not pregnant for a long time and so far I’ve had three while being pregnant. I actually just had it the other night. I absolutely hate these migraines they scare me when I lose my vision.

In my case, my migraines got worse for the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. Unfortunately, riding them out was the only thing I could do. From previous migraines, I invested in a headache cap which was kept in the freezer - literal game changer & can be bought from the likes of Amazon!

Thanks girls, it is a case of just battling through isn’t it, If a baby and migraines come as a pair then I’ll just have to man the hell up. They absolutely suck though! Especially still having zigzags and flashes going on. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day 🙈 thanks for replying, it’s great to get reassurance xx

A surge in hormones will def be a contributing factor, it certainly was for me anyway. Good luck xx

Hi @Rachel, I’ve also had migraines with aura since a teenager. I had headaches and one migraine with aura in my first trimester but none so far in my second. I’ve heard they can get better or worse in pregnancy. Tylenol with a coke for caffeine, ice pack and naps in a dark room is how I managed. As far as still seeing a visual disturbance, I would consult a doctor. Anytime I experience a change in my migraines, I like to keep my doctor in the know. I hope it clears up soon 🙏 I’ve had overall blurriness linger around episodes but no specific spot or blind spot, but there’s such high and scary variation in migraine symptoms. Hang in there, mama!

@Cass thank you so much for your comment, means a lot 😊 I’ll see how it is come the morning and will speak to GP if it persists. I’m pretty convinced it’s down to the change in hormones, hopefully a sign of them being strong and in abundance 🤞 thanks again. Glad you’re getting on better with your second trimester…there’s hope yet xx

@Rachel absolutely! How are you today? Yes, there’s definitely hope ❤️❤️ I had so many weird symptoms in my first trimester due to the hormone changes. People typically talk about just morning sickness getting better in the second trimester (which was true) but I’m feeling pretty normal now whereas before I had bad headaches, dizziness, exhaustion, heart palpitations and such that have cleared up! I feel like my migraine with aura is actually better than normal as I would typically be getting 3-4 a month with the time change and weather transition to spring around this time and I haven’t had any!
