Have any of you introduced non-vegan allergens when weaning?

I’m torn as what to do. I don’t want to compromise our values and bring animal products into our home, but I’ve heard it can prevent future allergies. And even if they are raised vegan, they could still accidentally encounter egg, milk etc. in certain situations like kid’s parties or out and about ?

I haven’t yet, but I will be introducing the allergens, I read that they need to be exposed once a month for 6 months. I just think if I don’t expose him, I would be really anxious sending him to nursery/school. Or imagine that when he’s older and he’s out with his mates and he tries something out of curiosity, I just wouldn’t want to risk him reacting badly. But my bestie hasn’t introduced them to her little girl, I think it’s all personal. xxx

@Bex Thanks for your comment. I read that the research suggests they need to be given several times a week, every week - just so you know! It was in Plantbased Juniors book x

@Carmen oh! Thank you! That is good to know, I have a long old while before my little one will be trying foods I must have misread! 😅 xxx

Hey I spoke to a dietitian about this and she said not to worry about it so we haven’t introduced them to my 15 month old. From what I remember she said it has to be long term regular exposure to have any chance of preventing allergies and she said the chance of our son having any reaction is very low (I’m not allergic to anything and my partner is just allergic to penicillin. maybe if you have allergies you could ask a dietitian?) also, the chance of a serious reaction with egg and milk I think is very low compared to with nuts.

You’d need to keep up the exposures weekly, but I’d really suggest it as mom to a son with severe cow’s milk/egg allergies, we were able to resolve the allergy through exposure and now I don’t have to panic if he picks up another baby’s bottle or cookie at playgroup. My husband’s family has a history of food allergies but the severity of my son’s allergies was still a surprise.

@Florence Hi! Do you remember how long the exposure is to happen for? I know it is recommended a few times per week but I’m wondering how long for?

@Carmen hi sorry no I think years rather than weeks or months but don’t take my word for it as I can’t remember exactly!x

I had the same thought process and debated whether or not too but we decided that we wouldn't introduce any plant based allergens and just deal with any situation if it ever arises
