Hello! We absolutely love raising our family in Cornwall! Having the beach and the countryside on our doorsteps has been amazing. Some great local baby groups and parks etc !
We made the move from Bradford last January. Currently living in Helston. We have a now 3 and a half year old and had a baby last November. It'ss such a different pace to life in many way. Thee ability to go to the beach on the weekend, or for us even after nursery for a few hour, is amazing. Both boys love it. Obviousl, there are lots more to consider than that, but we are so happy we made the right decision. Feel free to message me xx
It's OK. Everything is tourist based so expect super high prices for any kind of day out but don't expect half places to be open out of season. Driving is a must as public transport is awful! I'm from Birmingham area where there's everything you could possibly want... cornwall is about 20 years behind everywhere else. There are jobs done here but not much housing. Cambor e and penzance are full of crack heads and homeless. I prefer it though as there's not the gang culture down here ... yet, i'm sure that will change in time though
@Katie thank you. So good to know there are still mum groups, I think my little one would be content just being on the beach every day (rain or shine!!) xx
@Nat thanks, this is really encouraging that you love raising your family there! ☺️
@Heather feels like such a different pace of life, but a good different! So nice to hear someone who’s made a big move too enjoying it. It’s so scary!! What’s Helston like? X
@Adele yea tourist high points is definitely on my mind! We both drive and work remotely so that takes a big burden off us. So Camborne and Penzance you think are no gos? Anywhere that’s a nicer area?
@Hayley It's a lovely town, not a centre for clothes shopping, haha, but there are plenty of cafes and little shops, and there are definitely more things to come. It's got a lovely boating lake and Pentose estate which has walks etc through to the coast path towards Porthleven or the Lizard. Good bus links to Penzance (which, by the way, has some lovely areas to it and we have never had an issue there), Truro and Falmouth, as well as Redruth and Camborne. We've also found it really welcoming and found some good clubs for our oldest and mum groups for me to go to with the youngest. Not blinkered, there are obviously issues with homelessness and drugs in the county, as with every area of the UK. Lots of attractions are priced at tourists. However, they also tend to offer locals passes or discounts, which make them much more affordable. We have made use of several of these offers in the last year and had some amazing times. I would say if you have the opportunity to do it, do it x
@Hayley I wouldn't say no go but stay away from the central areas if you can as center of town there is always trouble and quite noisy as expected with all the pubs. Pengegon is the worst in Camborne though. I live about 10 min walk from the town center and alot quiter. I would defiantly prefer to live in cornwall then "up country" as everyone says down here. Its a lovely way of offering when you get used to it, alot slower. It does rain an awful lot though, I'm amazed when I go back up to see my sister, was there a week and it didn't rain!!!! Was well impressed though we fo get a couple nice weeks every year. I know it's doesn't sound like I'm selling the place but as daunting as it is I would do it and you have the added support of family if things don't go to plan straight away. If you want to be close to Lelant, hayle and St.ives are the closest and both very nice places though expensive. Camborne/redruth probably cheapest places to live rent wise just stay off main highstreet noise wise
Im from the Lizard but moved away for 16 years (mostly in London) then moved back home when I had my son 16 months ago. If I’m honest, I find it really isolating though that’s probably because I don’t drive so I’m stuck at home all the time! It’s hard to make new friends but I know there are groups out there if you can get to them. Driving is key! It’s a beautiful place and I’m glad my son has his grandparents and cousins around. Just be prepared for tourist season!
@Heather thank you, this is so helpful! I think most towns have good parts and parts locals say to avoid really… just hard to know which parts when you’re miles away 😅 I love the idea of coastal paths (I have an outdoors girlie!) x
@Adele thank you! I feel like most people are saying to stay out of the main centre of town. It’s a shame as I have seen a lovely house just by the church, but I think it’s not a great location. Totally expect the less than great weather as we have family here who do not hold back with their thoughts on it haha 😅
@Rosanna it’s so hard to make friends after having a baby isn’t it. I don’t have any where we live now, so moving closer to family who can bridge that loneliness gap. Thankfully I do drive which sounds like a must in cornwall! Tourist season definitely is a worry, think I will just avoid the popular coastal areas as sounds like it will be really busy in summer and dead in the winter!
Ive only ever lived three places in my life; Torpoint where I was born (love the place), Liskeard (where I live now) and Nuneaton in the Midlands. I much prefer Cornwall overall - and my husband whom I imported from the midlands (lol) much prefers it here too - the way of life is a little more relaxed we feel, plus I prefer the air, water and the proximity to a beach 🤣

Did you make a decision? :) It has a lot of pros, being near the beaches, lots of nice walks around, and there are good places to visit for kids. Though there can be less kids activies than some other counties, I've heard some people who have relocated to Cornwall say this! Driving does make life a lot easier, especially with kids. I enjoy living on the outskirts of a town now, close enough for amenities but also close to beaches and nature walks :) Teenagers can get a bit bored but the public transport is slowly improving. And we do have more rain, especially in winter 😂 I think Cornwall has a lot to offer. I do love living here.
Have you decided? 🥰 such a big decision to make! I live in Carbis bay I also have a 3 year old and a four month old and we absolutely love it down here! Always up for a meet up as well if you are ever down this way☺️
@Chloe we have! We are moving on Monday! 🙌🏻 going to be staying with family in lelant for a few months while we decide where we want to live. Very excited! Would love to meet up when I’ve arrived! ☺️
@Saffron yes! We are moving on Monday! ☺️ I think you’re right, looking it does seem there are fewer ‘kids’ places. But tbh my little girl just likes being outside, playing with sand and picking stones 😅 thankfully I drive too, which is essential! Where abouts are you? I’ll be staying in Lelant
@Hayley that’s amazing!! You’ll absolutely love it, there is also quite a few groups around too for little ones☺️ Definitely up for meeting when you are all settled x
I can’t compare it to anywhere as I’ve always lived in Cornwall, but I love it here! I’m like that I’m minutes from the beach and lovely walks. There’s lots to do for kids, even babies (toddler groups etc). There are mum groups you could go to and there’s coffee shops everywhere to go for meet ups! Feel free to pop me a message if you want to know anything else xx
