@Kiarra thank you! I'm a ftm so I didn't even know there were other options!
Same 🩵 I just researched heavily and had a doula lol
I got a shot of pitocin for my bleeding as my midwife was worried. I trusted her and wanted to avoid hospital transfer as I was in a birthing center. I’ve never heard of it being done for the placenta. My placenta came pretty quickly with no tugging.
they did this to me without my consent 😔 i would have said no. it’s best to let your body deliver the placenta on its own, and it’s not good to pull on it, it increases your risk of hemorrhage
@Izzie how long can I hold off on pitocin before they start pressuring me?
30 minutes
https://evidencebasedbirth.com/ I'd recommend reading about it there and then talking to your doctor. My understanding is that pitocin after delivery can really help reduce the change of excess bleeding since it helps the uterus contract. This is very different than using it during delivery. I have not heard any good reasons for tugging on the cord other than impatience. That seems like a bad idea.
@Taylor you can use Pitocin after delivery to help deliver the placenta, and you can also do a slow drip for four hours after to help the uterus contract down. I refused Pitocin for the delivery of my placenta, but I allowed the drip for four hours to help my uterus contract. There is still a risk of hemorrhaging with it even though the point of it is to prevent a postpartum hemorrhage though. The only reason I agreed to do it is because I had already been hospitalized for five weeks, and I knew from my blood work that my clotting factors were high and risk of hemorrhaging because of the Pitocin was low.
Mine came naturally after 15 min
I declined it and birth my placenta myself (no hands tugging at anything). But my Midwives aren't typically wanting to force that and my doulas didn't want it either. My whole birth was hands off his father caught him and everything. No ivs no cervical checks no medicine and only intermediate monitoring for baby
Yu can hold off without them pressuring you for about 10 min (is obgyn) and maybe 30-40min with midwife but don't be deterred. Stand your ground. Say no and mean no. "No thank you. I will let my body naturally birth my placenta." "No thank you. I will allow my uterus start contracting with breastfeeding my baby or naturally"
For me I’ll probably always opt for pitocin after. my first birth was an induction where they turned pitocin off for delivery. The placenta came not long after baby but I started bleeding really heavily after so they had to turn it back on. They highly recommend going for pitocin immediately after birth for my second because of my history. I went ahead and did it and had no issues it’s one of those things because it’s helped and all has gone well I’d rather be safe than sorry
I declined it. talk with your doctor. They allowed me the full 30 minutes before they would make me take it. I think I delivered the placenta on my own after 15 minutes.
