Anemia

At what point have you gotten an iron infusion for anemia? I was flagged as slightly anemic in may and started taking iron supplements. They tested again this month and my iron levels have dropped even further, well into the anemic levels, but the midwife just said to “keep doing what you’re doing.” But if what I’m doing works so well, why have my levels continued to drop?? Anyone else dealing with something similar ? I’m planning to discuss it at my next appointment in two weeks, but it just doesn’t feel right. I’m also showing signs of fatigue, feeling cold and craving ice all the time, which I know are all solid signs of anemia.

I’ve been taking them for 4.5 months, still seems wrong that numbers have dropped so much

Everything I’m reading says symptoms should improve after 2-3 weeks, the three months is to fully restore iron levels. I wouldn’t expect it to restore my levels since I’m actively pregnant, but I would expect it to at least keep my levels the same.

I’ve had chronic severe anemia all my life (to the point where I have chronic fainting) and it got wayyyy worse with the pregnancy and tbh they won’t do that till your about to die from the anemia which you would know when it’s that bad I’ve gotten to a point where anything I’d do that any exerted energy even looking up would cause me to pause out and they still did do that, your body is pretty good at responding and regulating it with fluids, extra salt, and iron supplements

This may be a silly question, but are you taking your iron with other supplements? It's best to space out your calcium supplements from your iron too help with the uptake. Not necessarily what's going on, but might be contributing. It was for me Anne it helped to space them out so calcium was in the morning and iron in the evening.

@Cece that sucks about your anemia, I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with that. I’m just surprised they didn’t even tell me to raise the dose or anything, you know? I feel like trash and can barely keep up with my toddler, I was the one that was like guys check my iron, something isn’t right. Even after my first delivery when I hemorrhaged they had me double up on iron and I don’t think my levels were this low then.

@Miriam not a silly question, it was one of the questions the midwife asked. When I take it, what I take it with etc. Then her next message was just to keep doing what I’m doing.

Thank you so much but I definitely agree with you how it’s super debilitating. Try to increase protein, fats, and salt however you can in your diet as well as as much water physically possible it helps your spleen produce more blood Also just keep an eye on it because some things can’t be controlled by us and you might just need an IV And lastly, take your iron with orange juice it’ll help your body metabolize it better

@Cece “eat more” is the one thing I do really well being super pregnant 🤣 but yes I try to focus on proteins and healthy fats for the energy. Didn’t know about the salt, thank you. And I do lemon juice and water with it, the orange juice makes me nauseous unfortunately 😩

Have you thought of seeing a hematologist ? Same happened to me and my OBGYN referred me to one to be able to know what the exact issue is.

@Fernanda no? What were the signs for you that it was something more than pregnancy related anemia?

No need to worry,According to what I understood the doc say was So usually anemia or low hemoglobin levels can be cause by different issues including lack of iron,B12, etc but after several blood work she said it wasn’t iron deficiency so am yet to see the hematologist on Friday, will keep you updated.i am 28 weeks gone now.

My blood count, hemoglobin as well is also low and got lower now, just like you mentioned is happening to you.

Yea salt is what makes your body retain water and actually use it that’s why too much cause weight issues it’s usually water retention (or bp/bs issues) but yea girl you got this and again stress is bad for everything so don’t go to crazy some stuff is really out of your control. Kinda like freaking out about bp being high and then it is, so just do what you can, let your body do what it does, and take care of anything if you need extra care💕💕

It could be what you’re not eating enough of , like greens and red meat . So it’s important to take the iron medicine and stay consistent so it can help . I’m anemic and I have gotten great results back and still take it because it will switch up on me . .
