Does this sound like an elastane/spandex allergy? I think my toddler is allergic to the elastic waistband on her pants 😩

We’ve started potty training and she’s so excited to be wearing big girl pants (underwear for non Brits!) for the first time but she’s come out in a rash around her waist. It’s not all the way around, it’s mainly on her back and a bit on the sides, and it’s not bothering her but it is red and bumpy. The pants themselves are 100% cotton and washed in our usual non bio detergent before wearing so I think it must be the elastane in the waistband? Or is it just her skin unused to having something sitting there since it’s her first time not in nappies? Is it normal to get a little rash the first time wearing pants?? Bonus points if anyone can recommend pants that don’t have elastic in them, I’ve done a quick google and everything has elastane, lycra or spandex in the waistband even if it claims 100% cotton 😩😩😩

A dermatologist would be able to do a patch test to find out. I am not sure if your GP would give a referal for that. Can I see a photo of the waistband? Maybe you could find some that have the elastic covered in cotton.

If it is an allergy, it will get tricky. I found this free of elastane. https://eczemaclothing.com/collections/kids-underwear?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAiOa9BhBqEiwABCdG80P5R0AIL5Yumne5PCj4nueYX0z2UIJY7TzE_AUoBqJ9FvciI0CPsBoC-lAQAvD_BwE

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 I will ask at the GP but I bet that won’t be quick! I’m gonna ask my mil if she can think of a way to stitch something over the band. These are the ones we have: https://www.marksandspencer.com/7pk-cotton-rich-animal-knickers-2-12-yrs-/p/clp60700419 Their other clothes have never been an issue!

Did she also get a rash on her legs? If not, it could be something else. While you figure it out you can try tucking a shirt under the waistband.

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 she got it in a line across her back and hips, though weirdly not on her front? So I’m a bit confused 😅 Tucking into the shirt is a good temp fix, thank you!! I didn’t think if that, but I folded the waistband over itself so it wasn’t touching her skin and the rash went away. We aren’t at the stage yet where we are wearing pants all the time so hopefully I can figure this out by the time we do 😩😩
