What does everyone think to this?

My son is definitely not writing his own name yet…

lol… mine chews pencils soooo ….

Mine is really interested in writing at the mo and has for a few weeks stopped doodling and started pretending to write instead. She can do the E for Esme and she knows S is like a snake - it's a pretty short, easy name though lol

My daughter can copy her name / trace over the letters and recognises them in different words like a for Amelia xx

She’s at nursery and also has been since just after her birthday xx

Don’t rush to get them writing with implements. Fine motor skills are much more important for now. If those are well developed then writing will be much easier. If they are learning their letters, they can practice drawing the letter shapes in sand with their fingers etc. Also practice using a writing implement to copy over line patterns (like wavy and zigzag shapes). They have lots of time to learn and will pick it up when they are ready. Scandinavian children do not start formal education until 6 or 7 and they have one of the best education systems in the world. Before then, they prioritise play.

It just says "as young as" so it's including those who have a natural.interest in it. My son didn't have any interest in writing but took to arts and crafts, my daughter loves using a pen and paper and notebook and making marks (she's the 2021 baby) but she deffo isn't writing her name, she likes to try to recognise letters but gets them right about 50% of the time. A friends son who was born in Feb 2022 can count up to 60s/70s effortlessly but he couldn't be less interested in a pen and paper, they're all totally different. Primary school just ask that by the time they start reception it's useful if they can recognise their own name written down so they can find their things x

I work in a nursery and whatever child is showing interest in writing we would then help them progress and not only that I had a key child who was doing a lot of this sort of thing at home and could write sentences before she left nursery. So technically even though we were not “allowed” to teach them to write their name we did. It’s only because schools will teach them a different way to form and write letters. Basically it’s your child if you want to help them write their name do it. I have a 3 and a half year old and I’ve already started to help him write H. He can’t do it independently yet but when he’s interested in mark making we work on it. 😌 x

My son is interested in letters and writing, something I’ve not pushed on him. He can trace his name with ease and can recognise lots of letter and sounds/what words start with those letters. He can’t independently write and I don’t expect him to for a while. Thier hands are not developed enough to be holding pens properly etc at this age. Just let them colour/scribble and make marks I wouldn’t worry about it, it’ll all come with time.

My daughter can write “Blippi” - well, close enough anyway 😆 just not her name, yet

Mines been able to spell his name (and mummy and daddy) since before he was 2, not write it though until a more recently. He’s really interested in writing though and we’re suspecting he’s autistic. I honestly wouldn’t worry at all though! I’m a primary school teacher and have had plenty of children start reception who can’t write their name. They all get it in their own time 😊

My girl can spell her name but can only write an o so far

No! I think it depends so much on the little one and their name too! I actually remember learning to write my name in reception class. My son can write a few numbers. He's obsessed with number blocks at the moment so I'm encouraging the attempts...

My little girl can sort of write her name, the d is sometimes a b and the s is always backwards if she does it completely by herself.
