Our little ones journey so far
When I first found out about my son’s right foot talipes I was feeling all kinds of emotions and came here to read all the posts for a bit of comfort. So I’m going to share our journey so far to hopefully comfort others. ❤️ Feel free to read ours or share your own journey.
- Found out during 20 week pregnancy scan.
- Had a follow up 3D scan for confirmation.
- My son was born and the doctor inspected his foot the following day and booked us in to the children’s hospital the following week.
- At 5 days old we went in for what we thought was just a consultation but ended up getting his first cast on. The doctor said he seemed to have a mild clubfoot and booked a tenotomy tentatively, mentioning that depending how the casting goes he may not need it.
- We had 3 weeks of casting, I hated this process as he was so small but he was a trooper and would bf or drink a bottle while getting casted and go back to sleep after. Biggest struggle was trying to keep it clean. They cut the cast off for us the first 2 times, the last time we soaked it off in the bath (his first ever bath) but honestly preferred them cutting it off and son liked the vibrations.
- After the third cast they confirmed his foot had corrected enough not to need surgery.
- He went into 23/7 boots and bar at 1 month old. We had regular appointments to check on him and go up sizes. He was only grumpy for a couple days then got used to them. We would only take them off each day for a bath and stretch. He learned to roll over back to tummy even while wearing them during the day.
- At 4 months old he started only having to wear them at night. He was so happy to move freely during the day, he started sucking on his feet and rolling around both ways. I was so happy to see him finally be able to move around as he wanted to.
- At 6 months old he is now crawling properly, pulling to stand and attempting to walk assisted. You wouldn’t even be able to tell he had talipes if you didn’t see him at night. He sleeps alright in his sleep sack, although he is starting to get annoyed at putting his boots and bar on.
Can’t wait to see how he goes walking properly when he gets to that point. So proud of how far he’s come!
