Dog licked baby's face

A dog has licked my baby's face today at a family gathering and I can't seem to calm down over it. My partner assured me after that the dog would never do anything to harm or bite anyone but it's not a dog I'm familiar with. Will my LB be okay? I'm freaking out from it catching me off guard and if my LB gets poorly :(

Hey, little one should be fine but you might feel better if you give their face a wipe or they have a bath to get properly clean 😊 it’s probably a good idea to have a conversation with your partner about interacting with dogs in the future though. It’s okay if it made you uncomfortable and you would want dogs to be introduced more slowly next time x

Is it a dog your partners familiar with? Just wipe the baby and it’ll be fine. Some people already have dogs and their babies get licked all the time x

Try to relax! We have a dog and with the best will in the world licks happen! Xx

Bless you I try to stop my golden retriever doing it to my little girl but it’s happened to us too and she was fine!

It sounds like your partner might be missing the point of why you're upset? Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to be more worried about getting sick from the lick than a bite that didn't happen? Try speaking to him about why you're upset. As for the lick, baby will be fine but you might want to give them a clean. My parents dogs lick my baby all the time (despite our best efforts)

Just monitor for any symptoms of illness and try not to overthink it. I don't let my babies/toddlers around dogs at all but a lot of kids grow up with them just fine being licked on.

Our kids definitely get some licks from our Labrador. Even tho we try to avoid it. There’s even studies that suggest kids who grow up with dogs (in first year of life particularly) have a stronger immune system… so little one should be fine. But I’d also be very careful with unknown dogs. My dog has been a care dog (going into a school and old people’s home for therapy) and he’s got a lovely temperament but dogs are animals and it’s always important to supervise little ones with them and my niece got attacked by an unknown dog… always best to be safe and do introductions slowly after a chat with the owners.

For me, on the plus side, regular expose to dogs (including being licked by them) is generally good for babies and evidence shows they are more likely to have better immune systems - but this does require prolonged exposure which one lick won't do! On the other side though, I am fearful of dogs biting as my partner has been bit by a strangers dog before and I worry what would happen if it was to a baby instead. So being familiar and comfortable about a dog being near your baby is important, especially when it comes to dogs biting
