My nephew was diagnosed with adhd first and then autism a few years later. His brother my other nephew is going through autism diagnosis currently so it runs in the family. My son is also going through autism diagnosis currently and my daughter is suspected adhd (she doesn't attend school yet so can't put in the referral for it right now) however the professionals involved with my son right now believe my daughter could possibly be autistic too as she has some traits but nothing big that we can see but they believe it could be because the adhd is sort of overpowering the autistic traits
I figured out I was autistic and have adhd around the same time. But that was in 2021. If you were diagnosed before 2016 they didn’t diagnose people with both because they used to think it wasn’t possible to have both at the same time. I recommend checking out the book Unmasking Autism by Devon Price the intro alone was such a profound ah-ha moment for me.
I'm dx with autism, but I currently suspect adhd because my executive function is shot. I can't concentrate dance having my daughter. I'm used to be efficient as hell granted I can decompress. But even simple task like making a grocery list seems like a mountainous task that takes me days to make.
Autism at 3, then adhd at 8. We were told they couldn't diagnose adhd til school age so we left it and he was going so well we thought oh maybe it was just autism but then some things came up and got the new dsm diagnosed (he was first diagnosed back in 2012 so was moderate then then in 2017/2018 he was diagnosed with level 3 and inattentive adhd.
@Lyss I was first referred for an assessed in the 90s 🫣 it was knocked back immediately because girls couldn’t have ADHD. I sought a diagnosis again as an adult but it didn’t occur to me to consider autism at that time. I will check out that book, thank you!
@Jade yeah I think having a child throws all of our coping mechanisms out the window, cause our child has their own ideas of how things should go and needs us to support them. I feel like I haven’t really decompressed since I was pregnant, even time away from my child is usually in a social situation with family or other mums and I find that more exhausting than chasing a toddler!!
Not myself but my eldest son was diagnosed with autism first then ADHD
