Getting child diagnosed with ADHD...

My husband was diagnosed with adhd at 8 years old. I've done a lot of research and everything I've read says my daughter has adhd. I've never had to do anything like this. My husband would like to change our diet first before going straight to meds as she's only 4. I'm not sure what foods to make and what is a big no besides dyes. I grew up on processed foods some (chicken nuggets, kraft mac and cheese). Do I first get her diagnosed and then meet with a dietitian or do we just change her diet and see if that makes any significant changes? My pediatrician says he doesn't like to diagnose kids until they are 7 or 8 but I can tell how much more this is affecting her everyday life and it's draining her.

So my son got a diagnosis at age 5. You can also have the school do testing as well.

@Jessica that's good to know. She will be starting Pre-k at the public school in August. I know they do an early childhood testing in October but didn't know they tested for ADHD. I work at the school in the pre-k classroom.

Also if she needs additional support in school consider getting a 504 plan. That will give her accommodations.

Going through something very similar with my 4 year old (5 in December) Our gp won’t refer her for assessment until she’s 6 even though nursery are in agreement that the signs are all there and she’s now getting to a point where she’s actually a danger to herself aswell as others it’s really hard work. Apparently you can do private assessments but personally our finances don’t allow for it here in the UK we are are looking around £950 at some places just for assessment that’s not even with treatment if we want treatment we have to go private for that too.
