Yes definitely ask for something in the mail because from my experience at most a debt collector agency will send you something and call not a law firm it’s giving scam vibes so please don’t give them confirmation on anything they don’t already have and if they said the for your information from a credit report sounds kinda fishy also so make sure you try and call the fraud department and get a freeze on all your stuff and see when the last time any information was pulled because that doesn’t seem right at all
I agree with the others. And if it is real you want everything in writing and hold on to it. My dad settled with a credit card company after his divorce and they kept coming after him for the full amount after he paid the settlement. Luckily he saves everything and he took it to a lawyer and they sent a letter or something and then they finally stopped and it was removed from his credit report. You just need to cover your ass. These places are shady.
@Rachel I’m not even sure who to contact to know if it’s real? It was a visa credit card. Maybe visa would have this information if it’s true?
Did he give you any information of where he was from or his name, phone number etc? If you have a way to get in contact with him I would ask him who is suing you, visa or a credit collection company? Then contact Visa directly or do research and contact the collection agency directly to determine the validity. I haven't been in this position but that honestly seems like such a small amount to sue over, especially considering most of it is probably fees and interest. Editing to add: if you determine it's valid. Definitely ask for a letter stating the terms of the settlement before you pay anything! Keep any receipts you can!
This is a scam!!!! Do not pay anything to this person. No debt collector is talking to a lawyer to drop the debt amount, this isn’t how any of this works.
This is 10000000% a scam do not give them any money
Sounds like a scam don’t talk to them if it’s been 7 years u owe them nothing check credit karma does it come up as that amount being owed?
No judgment here. I’d absolutely ask for something on official letterhead in writing. Don’t let them bully you into giving payment over the phone. This reeks of scam, but anyone who is legitimate won’t be opposed to proving their legitimacy
Scam!!!
I would ask to be sent something in the mail
