Looking for any vet techs/ anyone who may know what this is

My 12 year old chihuahua has been coughing loads over the last 2 weeks. The vet is saying kennel cough but my other dogs haven’t got it and she seems to be worst first thing in the morning and after eating and drinking. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this is before I call the vet in the morning? I’m trying to prepare myself as she has a grade 4 heart murmur but they assured me her heart was okay and this wasn’t related. I’be done some research into collapsed tracheas and I’m so worried this is what it is.

Get a second opinion if you feel there’s something else doing on. Coughs can be related to heart conditions or collapsed trachea, or kc. Kennel cough has a distinctive hacking cough, which this does kinda sound like.. but again a second opinion might put your mind at ease. If a vet diagnoses a collapsing trachea, try not be too worried because they are very common in little breeds. My chi has it and she’s just fine she just honks if she gets over exited 😅

@Laura thank you for this reply. She’s always done “reverse sneezing” when she gets over excited but this is on another level and seems to be getting worse. I think I’m just panicking because she’s got a heart condition, she’s gone blind and it’s starting to feel like a slippery slope towards the end. I’ve had her since I was 12 years old and it’s so hard not to worry with the little ones!! 😅 bless her, I’m going to get a second opinion tomorrow to try ease my mind because even with anti inflammatories, she’s getting worse :((

I’m not a vet but my chihuahua was on medication for the last year of his life for a heart murmur/heart failure and he had a cough similar to this. He did live for years from being diagnosed with the murmur though, I don’t want to worry you but I would definitely get a second opinion xx

If not kennel cough he could need an X-ray or ultrasound. Could be something with his heart. If the kennel cough meds don’t work they should want to do X-rays. I work at a vets office

Doesn’t sound like a collapsing trachea. They tend to sound like a goose honk. It does sound like kennel cough from the video, but kennel cough is just inflammation of the trachea, making them cough. Could be multiple underlying causes. I would recommend a heart scan to rule out any heart related problems and chest X-rays if scan is clear, make sure nothing else happening in the lungs. Also, are you measuring her resting respiratory rate? How many breaths she takes in a minute at rest or asleep? It should be less than 30, but an upward trend would pick up any deterioration in the heart quicker than an exam. Hope this all helps and she’s ok!
