Sweep

How do midwives decide whether or not to offer you a sweep? I’m 38+3 and will be 38+5 when I see my midwife. No signs of baby coming yet! Do people recommend a sweep or await it happening naturally? Thanks x

Perhaps a sweep after your due date but no need of you've not even hit your due date yet I wouldn't think?

They’ve gave it to me when I was 37 weeks. However I’m having an elective C section so it wasn’t necessary at end x

Personally I’d only consider a sweep of induction/c section was on the cards and I wanted to avoid or maybe if over due date. I had two with my first but really don’t know if it was the second sweep that helped her along or are was just ready to come

They don't really decide, it's protocol to offer it. Bear in mind that you need to be at least a tiny bit dilated for them to actually be able to get in there and perform the sweep. 38-39 weeks is still early so there's a good chance of them not being able to do much. I can remember when I had my first attempt with my first one, probably around due date. The successful sweep was at 41 when I was 1cm. Sadly, I never progressed past 2cm so I think it wasn't ready. No sweeps this time, unless I'm properly overdue.
