Art block?

Does anyone else have really bad art block I ask cause I haven’t done art since 19 yrs old. It’s like when I pick up a pencil or paint brush, I get this guilt or uneasy feeling telling me “ I’m not supposed to do this” or “it doesn’t do nothing for you” I don’t know why but I wish it would go away. I do miss doing art

I think start small, baby steps. Buy an adult colouring book and just pick up the pencil and start. Listen to some music or let your mind wonder and just don’t think- just do. Just color. When coloring we can actually let our minds free and color like a toddler. And nomatter what colours you use or don’t use, somehow the picture ends up amazing still. Paint by numbers is another great one because the colors are chosen already for you, you just have to put the color in the right spot. Pink for 1 etc. start w any of those. I love doing my nails, it’s therapeutic for me. The concentration, the focus needed. I start my Spotify playlist and get my supplies ready and can spend an hr doing by nails, and if I have time and need to, my feet as well.

Is it possible that you have been taught that prioritizing your own well-being is selfish? Are you usually agreeable? Do you struggle to advocate for yourself in order to keep the peace? Have you compromised on your own goals? You might be struggling to fulfill your own needs even though they are valid. It is called internalized negativity. It leads to self-doubt and can be emotionally draining. I had writer's block, and this is stuff the therapist told me. She recommended taking self-care group therapy. I also took one art therapy session. I am writing and painting after completely stopping these things to raise children. I had to retrain my brain to recognize creative things as part of my mental health wellness and not as a selfish activity. It's not any different than brushing your teeth. Really, it's just something that you need to do for yourself, and then I had to question why anyone would tell me not to do something that is imperative to my mental health. Including myself.
