Housing in Hewham

I will be made homeless soon with my 3 year old son and just wanted to ask if anyone had gone thru similar to help prepare me for what’s to come. What is the process like and how long am I looking at until I’m adequately housed? I know I’ll be placed in temporary accommodation first but for how long and what does that look like? The council aren’t giving me any info! I also want to stay close to where I am right now as my son goes to nursery here and I may be studying soon too. What are the chances they’ll do this? Again, just looking for answers of those who have been thru similar so they can shed some light on their experience

Haven't been through this personally, but closely know someone who has been through this in Ilford. They were in temporary accommodation for a few years. Initially a grotty hotel for a couple of months, then a temporary flat which was a nice new build. When they were finally placed in a permanent council property it was in Canterbury, and they didn't have the option to decline the move.

@Takia oh wow! Months in a hotel?! How is that sustainable, how do you eat lol? So many questions. Did this person have children? What if they go to local nursery in the area and/or your working? Do they expect people to uproot everything. I understand the situation in Newham is bad but I’m open to all of east but cannot go that far. Anyway just thinking out loud now and I know you won’t have all the answers so thank you for your insight

Obviously it's varied and everyone has their experiences, but the general idea I've had is that it can take months and months (if not years) to be temporarily housed, before you're placed somewhere permanent. Ranges amongst hotels, flats/houseshares that aren't the best/ideal and not always local. And yes if you decline a permanent property far away the council aren't under any obligation to keep housing you and find you somewhere, as they've done their part and you declined. It's so rubbish, and a terrible situation to be in, I'm sorry you're going through this 😔 A relative works in the council and told me a while back the waiting list for a council house in Newham is 12 years minimum, for a house you're looking at 40+ years (!!!) But obviously so many things factor into that.. the size of property, your needs/circumstances etc. Hopefully council staff will keep you updated as needed, and keep pressuring them if they don't. They're notoriously bad at informing, you have to chase them. Good luck x
