Swollen hands/feet

Over the last few weeks I’ve started getting swollen hands/feet and they’re getting worse every day. I’m at the point now where my feet are constantly like balloons and my fingers lock and are extremely painful to bend. When I told the midwife she said she could refer me to physio but at 37 weeks I didn’t think there was much point. Anyone else suffering with this and have any advice?

Hey, I’m 37 weeks and had a consultant appointment the other day as soon as I mentioned my legs/feet swelling he booked me in to have my legs scanned for a clot. I have no other symptoms and have been put on blood thinners until I have the results. Might be worth ringing your Maternity advice line and just getting a second opinion xx

I’m surprised your midwife has no concerns about potential pre-eclampsia risk. I would definitely get a second opinion so they can make sure you get any tests etc to rule everything out.

@Tolu she said she wasn’t concerned because my urine test and blood pressure were fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sadly, sometimes it is just what it is. My friend had it - her hands and feet were massively swollen but they tested her for everything and she didn't have any condition, just one of those "lovely" pregnancy things. It resolved straight after giving birth. I've been suffering with some swelling as well, which never happened with my first and it's sooo uncomfortable. If you're worried, perhaps it's worth calling up your GP for a 2nd opinion? It could be that nothing can be done but equally it could be something they could help you with! Xx

Compression socks saved my feet 👣 x

yeah ever since Monday when weathers got warmer I’ve swelled ridiculous. I can only get my feet in flip flops now and my hands hurt to move my fingers. This did happen to me though in my first pregnancy when I was due Feb, and I swelled literally like an elephant around this time so it is normal. Just gotta keep going and keep resting as much as possible!

@Lucy my midwife said the same to me, just told me to keep an eye out for changes/if it gets worse/new symptoms such as rib pain, headaches, blurred vision/specks

@Lucy oh, I’m glad to hear you had no other symptoms for pre-eclampsia and they’ve ruled out that possibility! Like others have said unfortunately some mums do just suffer with swelling during pregnancy - my friend really struggled when she had her twins. There’s not long left now so hopefully you won’t have to deal with it too much longer.

I was pregnant all summer during the last heatwave. Really common to get really swollen. Get your feet in an ace bucket and hands above your head. You may find as it’s cooler today it’s not as bad.

Hey @Lucy I have the same - horrific swollen hands (feet not as bad thanks to socks) but have had it for three weeks before the hot weather. I have ended up with really painful carpal tunnel from it and am Struggling to use a knife and fork, do buttons etc. I have seen my GP, a physio, my midwife and my OBs consultant and there is literally nothing they can do. The physio won’t be able to do much - Splinting made them worse because of the swelling, compression gloves just hurt my hands further, staying hydrated, stretches you can find online etc. but they couldn’t prescribe anything for it unfortunately so just had to grin and bear it. Hope you’re managing, just know you are far from alone and I’m in agony too!! Hopefully will all be over and forgotten once baby arrives 🥰 xx

Oh and because it’s hormonal unfortunately all the icing, elevating etc doesn’t work for me… x

@Francesca thanks so much that’s put my mind at ease! I tried icing last night and it didn’t take the swelling down but made them feel a bit better at least! Not long to go, we got this 💪🏽
