Infant gaviscon

My LB is 7 weeks old and has been prescribed infant gaviscon for suspected silent reflux. He usually has very regular bowel movements (very runny at times). We have started off giving two sachets a day as conscious it can cause constipation. After his sachet last night he seemed to be spitting up a lot more than usual and thicker. I had to change his outfit and Moses basket sheet which is unusual, he has always had little spit up but this seemed more than that. Is this just a temporary thing as he gets used to the meds as i thought this was the opposite of what gaviscon is for? He did seem a lot more settled generally for a good few hours. I Can see his stools are a lot firmer and less runny but he did go twice in the night so not too worried about constipation for now. I’m thinking keeping to two sachets a day at the times where he’s most unsettled (usually overnight). Guess I’m just wondering others experiences?

Gaviscon isn’t a wonder fix. I had to try to balance out the amount I gave my daughter as she was either screaming in pain from silent reflux or constipation. Although you have more spit up, does he seem happier?

@Steph last night he did seem a lot better in himself generally, a lot more settled. I’d pick the spit up any day! Bless them, they don’t have it easy do they. How did you get on with the balance? Did you limit the amount given to help with the constipation or use other things?

I continued with gaviscon till 7 months. My daughter was constipated at the beginning but I didn’t stop cause she was so much more settled and didn’t spit up as before. She did outgrow it and wasn’t anymore constipated. You just need to be patient

@Imelda that’s great. How long before your little one was no longer constipated?

I had to reduce the gaviscon to the minimum possible for it to have any effect whilst also not causing constipation. If she was constipated, I would add a little extra water to the formula to help under the doctor’s advisement.
