UK plant-based formula?

Hi! Does anyone have any experience with receiving a prescription for plant-based formula in the UK? My baby is 9m old and breastfed but I’m unable to pump enough for her to have at nursery. I know plant-based formula can be prescribed for medical needs but I can’t find any info on whether family veganism is sufficient. She has never had any dairy and I’m not comfortable with even trying it if it’s not necessary. I’m seeing a GP next week but thought I would ask here in the meantime. Thanks so much in advance.

In the UK dairy free formulas are not plant based, they contain fish oils

As far as I am aware, it doesn’t exist in the UK and you need to get it imported. Wysoy contains vitamins which are animal derived. There is grow with iris which is plant based powder but it’s from 12+ months

So there isn't plant based formula or vegan formula in the UK. There is amino acid formula which is only prescribed for severe dairy allergy, which your child may well have if never exposed to dairy in the womb or breast milk, as with my child. However this has got omega 3 from fish. They don't do soy formula at all any more. The only way to get a truly vegan formula is to import from either France or Australia.

(Talking from a non prescription POV)

Unfortunately, doesn’t exist in the uk, however there is a formula you can buy online called sprout that’s vegan x

@Kelly unfortunately they haven't made the SMA wysoy for a few years now

Oh really?!? I exclusively pumped and had a good supply so I never needed it thankfully, so just moved straight to growing up milk when she turned one and stopped pumping!

Thank you so much everyone! I knew vegan formula wasn’t available but I wasn’t aware that plant-based isn’t available anymore either. I’m happy with it being as close to plant-based as possible but seems like it will be difficult.

@Aggs your best bet is to see if they'll prescribe an amino acid formula like Neocate, which as far as I know is vegan aside from the fish omega 3 and potentially the vitamin D source. But that would likely only be prescribed if your baby was showing dairy allergy symptoms, but worth a shot

@Kelly which growing up milk did you use? I have bought some alpro soy one ready for when she turns 12m but I have seen the adverts for Iris

@Emma yes that’s one of the biggest things I’m worried about, as she’s never been exposed to it. Was the amino acid formula prescribed in your situation or did you order internationally?

@Emmo I’ve just used the alpro oat one and soya when we haven’t been able to get hold of oat. Never had any issues with it! Grow with iris does look good but it’s expensive in comparison! I did read they are working on a baby formula though so hopefully in future there will be better options pre 12 months!

It was prescribed as we had to move to formula for medical reasons and he then showed symptoms on standard dairy formula and hydrolyzed formula

@Laura I’m just looking at this, have you tried it before? ☺️

Hey y’all! There are a lot of diy plant-based formulas out there! Here’s a simple one to try for your littles: - Hemp or Rice milk - Amber Agave - Seamoss gel

@Ocher home making formula is so dangerous if you don't know the exact nutritional ratios babies need!

@Aggs amino acid/ prescription formula are awful tasting and full of nasty ingredients. I would absolutely stay away if your baby doesn’t have a dairy allergy. My baby has a dairy allergy and even then I still refused to give her the prescription formulas after research deeply into how they are made and what goes into them x
