@Marina thankyou, I didn’t know whether ignoring it was the right thing to do or not
My LB just tries to get my attention by doing this. I ignore it. I also sometimes fake cough back and he chuckles to himself so he knows it’s just for attention / fun x
@Francesca it was funny at first 😂 now it’s like as soon as she’s put down she does it, we’ll do it back to her sometimes but she ends up doing it more!
@Maddy if it helps you feel better, even though she probably doesn't understand many words. You can say something like "mommy will help you when you can calm down" and then busy yourself.
@Marina Thankyou, I try not to give her really positive reactions to it (not negative or mean or anything) but not really excited and bubbly if that makes sense
My little girl does this now. At first we would respond but now we've learnt shes faking it we ignore her behavior
@Maddy Yes, and at this age up until about age 5. Childrens brains dont really tell the difference between positive or negative attention. So it doesn't really matter what kind of response we give it, but if we do give a response they're going to continue to do that behavior.
Omg my 11 month old has been doing this and it’s only when she’s frustrated with me or just simply mad bc what I’m doing doesn’t involve her please let me know if you find out how to get her to stop she never sounds congested or anything it’s just an airy fake cough
@Emily yes this exactly, we call it her ‘cough of disapproval’ 😂
@Marina okay good point thankyou!
My 6 mo just started doing this 🤦🏽♀️
I love it when my son does it, me and my partner cough to make him copy us. Can’t understand why it drives you insane, your little ones just loving life 🤷♀️
@Sarah it was cute for a while but it’s now constant when something happens that she’s not happy with (like putting her down for 2 secs, or given her something she doesn’t want) sometimes there isn’t even a reason!
My baby 4 month does this all the time!

@Maddy fair enough, I just don’t see how it can drive you insane when she’s just living life, they’re just developing personalities 😅
Ready the book Hunt Gather Parent. It will change your life. But my favorite quote for kids is "Where attention goes, energy flows". You've got to ignore it. But also shes 9 months. It will pass as long as you stop giving it attention.
